Rafael Benitez unveiled new boy Glen Johnson and then took a swipe at Manchester City with their "money, money, money" approach to the transfer market.
The Liverpool boss has spent £17 million on the England full-back, a large chunk of which is wiped out by the cash Portsmouth still owe the Anfield club from the Peter Crouch deal. And while Benitez played hardball with Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano over their long-term futures, he accepts that the market was now "crazy" and dominated by money.
Benitez, who admitted he had tried again to sign Gareth Barry this summer from Aston Villa, said: "We had to pay big money, the market is now crazy. It is all money, money, money now. But we were signing a good player, an England player, and that is very positive."
He added: "He has a good mentality, and when I spoke to him first it was clear he wanted to come here.
"Things have changed. You have to adapt to a situation. Manchester City and big clubs in Europe are spending big money, so the market has changed and we have to work harder.
"You have to do that to stay at the level we are at because of the big money being spent here and abroad."
City also wanted Johnson, but Benitez said: "It was difficult, some clubs are offering big money. But he wanted to come here, that was the difference.
"We did go back again for Barry, but as I said. it is all about money, money, money. It is as simple as that."
On City's influence on the market and their prospects for next term, Benitez added: "City have signed a lot of good players, but that is no guarantee they will win anything. But it will be interesting to see what happens next season.
"But whatever happens, experience is more important and we feel that we have that to be in the top positions. If you spend big it is always easier to perform well. But when you have a good understanding between players that is also important. If they are together, they work hard, that is just as important."

people aren`t jealous of city`s or chelsea`s money. people moan that your trying to buy your way to the top. teams like madrid, barca, liverpool, milan`s, man utd, juventus, munich, etc, are world famous and respected for there success, fans, and great stadiums and traditions of there club. there is nothing wrong with being excited for your club and players they might buy. but all your fans think your are going to take over and win everything possible, and you start trying to slag other teams because you now have money. this is why you might win a trophy here and there, but you will never, never, be a successful team like the name above and many more. no with players that only want to play for your team for £££££.
as a chelsea fan i want to wish man city all the best in their quest to challenge for major trophies ! too many jealous people on here who forget where their so called hero's come from(were bought)yet rmember success of decades ago!!!!!!!
hey terri-ann how bout you shut up. go and talk about your @#$% team and stay off liverpool pages.
Why do we find it easy to abuse opposing managers and teams? Why can't we for ones stay quiet if we do not have contribution to make? Someone said Benitez spent 17 million on a defender and that means is a fool because ferguson has never done that before. The fellow has forgotten the amount spent on ferdinand (30 million); But if you think that this is a forum for venting your dislike for opposing teams and managers, then you are getting it wrong because what you say here go a long way to show how mature and intelligent you are. Benitez has said nothing wrong, the headline does not really represent his comments. CHELSEA FOR REAL............ Whatch out for chelsea this coming season.........ChoooooooooWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww .
city can keep your £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ as some people put it. liverpool will keep there trophys, trophys, trophys, trophys, trophys.
also would`nt you think that with all your £££££££££££££££££££££££££
you would be able to own your own ground instead of renting an athletics built stadium from the manchester council.
forget bout barry..now..rafa should look for juan mata, silva and villa or some player can replace pennant and alonso also mascherano...
Can you really blame Barry? Rafa had the chance to sign him last year but was not willing to spend an extra couple of million on him, yet he now spends that amount on a right back! (forget the money they owed you for Crouch he has still cost 18m).
kim s,you are the one who is idiot in this board!!!because you are liverfool fans,so surely you will defence this old man and your club..saying about facts and intelligent,I don't think that all you say is a fact and correct one among others.people who's always pretend to be smart like you actually is the one who's couldn't accept the reality...
JT for city,,,,£250.000,per week,,,,
I think most fans would welcome having city finishing in top 4 to change it a bit, they are just all scared that it might be there team that gets replaced......After all would Vidic, Fabregas, Torres, Essien (Etc.) all be happy at their club if they were only finishing 5th and playing in Uefa? doubt it!
ALL I CAN SAY IS,,WHAT A SOFT C**T,,IF THE GAMES GETTIN TO HOT,,GET OUT THE KITCHEN FAT BOY,,,NO POINT MOANING AT WHAT CITY HAVE,,F***ING FAT JOKER,,,UP THE BLUES
£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££
Rafa wat bout Madrid spendin 200m dey dont even have, racking up debts dey have no intention of payin bak.....why dont uefa step in and put a stop to dis....At least city's owner has the money, its chump change to him....Let him try buy success it worked 4 chelsea well for 2 yrs at least, now der not even as gud as pool haha
don`t man city deserve a bit of success after 33 years without a trophy, i`ve just read. sorry i thought you had to earn success not buy it. teams like liverpool, man utd, arsenal, everton, spurs, villa these teams have been at the top flight for a long time and have had success for years because they are great clubs with hard work and great traditions. city have been a yoyo club for years with no success. so the only way they think they can become a successful club is by buying every player they can. so carry mark hughes your doing a great job there at man city your record speaks volumes p 56 - W 24 - D 8 - L 24. i mean rafa lost 2 games last season (and city fans says rafa`s a s**te manager)
so with a record like mark hughes, your odds on to topple the top 4 and even win the league.
How can Pool fans claim they haven't spent money?! just did a quick sum not including all signings and the total is over £190m since he started. Which is a fair amount of money. You may say "but we got money back on most players such as Crouch, Keane and sissoko etc." well fair enough but that to me says he has signed many failures, after all United have had plenty of money come back in for sales. It is money spent not net profit after sales. Liverpool have spent money so please stop making out United and Chelsea have spent so much more.
bigusvernus
Bit contradictive there, in 1 sentence u say for fans to stick to there own boards teams etc... then very next line start talking about every other team lol
city are shytty no fecker wants to join em, only greedy wa^ker with no ambition like gareth Barry end of!
what really makes me giggle is that the fans, and i mean that in the loosest sense of the word, of the "big four" are now not very happy because there is a new kid in town whos got pockets full of moola and the money to buy all the best toys. comment 431 is typical of this attitude, city will be a major european force within the next three to five years and there is not alot the fans or boards of these other teams can do about. i suggest that the other teams fans and boards concentrate on matters at their own clubs , for example, where any money for anything is gonna come from at liverpool, at the minute they can buy an egg cup never mind the premier league and one of their own (torres) has already stated that city will be a threat this season, utd, well what can i say, great team but if this seasons ambition is reflected in their summer signings, nothing more needs to be said. we will not go away, we are back and the "big four" dont like that, unlucky!!!! the future looks very blue, CTID

Liverpools squad might not be as expensive now as the rest, but your forgetting all the flops the waiter has spent big money on and just sold on a year later, or sent on loan or given away free to a sunday league pub team.
Benitez is a fool, he spent the whole of last summer wasting time over Villa's demands for the fee for Barry, right up to the last minute on transfer deadline day. Mark Hughes decided enough is enough and moved quickly and positively, this is what Barry wanted, Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea have had their cosy little top four domination for too long, funded by cash from the champions league. this is not healthy for the game shown by dwindling attendances as people who have no chance of ever winning anything losing interest. City will at least put a fresh face in the mix and those who bleat about the money ask yourselves one thing, City fans have had 33 years of jack s***t to shout about, do we not deserve a bit of success? like it or not, we are getting stronger and will within a couple of years be where we want to be, the fat spanish waiter wouldn't be whingeing if it was him who had a virtually unlimited budget would he? he is a @#$% and Liverpool would be better off with a different manager who could at least be honest and admit that apart from Alonso and Torres has signed also ran after also ran and sold them a season later.
Wow, I dont feel Raffa is a good manager, however the filth spewed out at him is ludicrous, its a game, a sport, lets not get carried away.
