Premier League - Everton sign Jo

Eurosport - Fri, 10 Jul 20:31:00 2009

Everton have snapped up Brazilian striker Jo on a season-long loan from Manchester City, subject to the completion of paperwork.

The 22-year-old spent five months at Goodison Park last term, and after a week of discussions, the former CSKA Moscow player will spend the next 12 months with the FA Cup finalists.

City initially wanted to sell the former Corinthians man for close to the £18 million fee they signed him for last summer but, with no-one willing to pay, they agreed to loan him back out.

Jo scored five times in 12 appearances for Everton last season, but his future at Eastlands was put in doubt by the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn last month.

The loan deal was initially agreed last weekend and the player travelled to Scotland with Everton for a training camp this week.

Everton's other two summer signings - midfielder Anton Peterlin and defender Skhodran Mustafi - have both received international clearance to feature against Bury.

  1. sappercommando25 are you a red nose LFC supporter by chance?

Everton are the peoples club, run my a manager who hasn't the money of the so called big four. We have in the past always finished higher up the table than anyone has given us credit for.
We rely on Moyes to buy the best players he can using limited funds to keep us competetive. How many times has he won manager of the month / year. More than anyone. Keep you eye on the table this year, we will finish above LFC.

At the end of the day, Everton has become one of those has-been clubs that shall never make its mark on the game again. No matter what player is drafted into those kind of mid-table clubs the clubs shall never have the financial or player capacity to compete with the likes of the so called "big four". We all know who they are now, don't we.

  8. jo was impressive for everton as a target man - whether his finishing is at the same standard as his great link-up play is another matter - great loan signing though.

  16. Hey, its unfair to say Hughes is a tool, I think he will get it right this season, he is signing the right type of players now in the likes of Barry, Tevez, Santa Cruz & even Nigel De Jong & if he manages to sign Sammy E'too, oh what a team, these are guys who will give 110% all the time regardless whether its Man U or Wigan there playing, the likes of Robinho, Elano, Jo ETC arent the guys 4 the premiership as they have no dig, they look good on the ball but without it there merely passengers. These are similar types of players that have crippled the likes of Newcastle over the lat few years. It wouldnt surprise me if Robinho dissapears before the end of August aswell. He wasnt Hughes's choice, it was the chairmans decision as he had just bought the club & wanted to show all & sundry his commitment to the club & that he would spend big to get his man. Give Sparky time, he will get the blend right.

  20. fulabeer, I agree with some of your points, but to say that Moyes will struggle - I doubt that. He might need to invest in order to break in the top four, but other than that, I think we're talking top-5 or top-6 finish for the Toffees. No doubt City might just change the public perception about themselves and land somewhere close, but still, Moyes possesses things money can't buy. From Chelsea supporter.
