Wigan Athletic have rejected a bid from Sunderland for Lee Cattermole, saying the midfielder is not for sale.
The Black Cats followed up former Latics boss Steve Bruce's interest in the 21-year-old by submitting an undisclosed offer.
However, Wigan rebuffed the bid "within the hour", with new manager Roberto Martinez determined to keep him at the DW Stadium.
Martinez said: "Lee is not for sale. End of story.
"He is a fantastic player, a leader on and off the field, and he is central to our plans going forwards. We are not interested in selling him which is why this offer was rejected immediately."
Sunderland boss Bruce is already hoping to push through his first summer signing over the weekend after agreeing a fee with Manchester United for Fraizer Campbell.
It is understood United have accepted a bid of around £5million for the England U21s international, who has been courted by Hull in recent weeks.
Campbell is expected to head for the north-east to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms as Bruce steps up his efforts to strengthen the squad he inherited from Ricky Sbragia.

Donney should learn to spell!!
WAGAN SHAD STACK TAY THA RAGBAY.
Wigan need to keep hold of him, next year he will be worth double i think he has potential to be one of the prems top midfielders and a regular for England.
This is true cameron, he is very aggresive and his statements have BNP written all over them. With regards to my original point, safcalsmb and the big plank are bosom buddies.....check out the horrendous name dropping on the "Quinn wants a Dunne deal" page
Really Tony?
I thought, what with him being a 1970's soccer hooligan throw back, he'd be pals with the likes of Nick Griffin; he certainly spouts the same sort of viscious hatred!
Cattermole is a scumbag who will be the next Joey Barton
oh and cameron....show some respect to safcalsmb, didnt you know his best mate is Niall Quinn?
Well said Cameron, as ever. Sunderland are really targeting the cream of Europe arent they? Well Quinny and Brucie did say there would be top quality signings.
'A seasoned centre-back'?
He's a thug and put at least 3 fellow professionals out of the game last season; his catalogue of disgraceful 'tackles' were even highlighted on Match of the Day, so don't come here denying it you girls! Anyway, why would he want to go to sunderland; wigan are a better club and will finish above them AGAIN next season.
Oh and before you start, Mr scumalsftm, i accessed this via the main links; why are you still continuing to promote your footballing hatred/poison via the NUFC pages - come to think of it, why haven't Yahoo removed your ID from these forums yet?
I bet you cant buy sour grapes at Harrods......not that Brucie will ever find out
i see the usual sour grapes from tony k

tony k u must be red numpty get lost away the lads!!
Absolutely brilliant!!!! I thought Brucie was going to be shopping at Harrods, instead he's gone straight back to his old club! Mind you, a club like Sunderland will always struggle to attract decent players
He is a leader on and off the field, how does he know him that well, he's not even back for pre season yet cause of being involved with england under 21's so probably never even met him.
