Tour de France - Hushovd reigns in Barcelona

Eurosport - Fri, 10 Jul 18:37:00 2009

Cervelo's Thor Hushovd took victory in a bunch sprint on stage 6 of the Tour de France in Barcelona.

CYCLING 2009 Tour de France Hushovd - 0

After David Millar (Garmin) had been caught in a nail-biting final few kilometres, Hushovd powered past Rabobank's Oscar Freire on the uphill finish in the Montjuic district of the city.

Fabian Cancellara finished in the lead group to retain his yellow jersey ahead of Friday's mountain-top finish in Andorra-Arcalis.

On a rainy, crash-filled day in Northern Spain, it was Millar who set the tone of the stage in a long break. Together with Frenchman Stephane Auge (Cofidis) and Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), the Scot managed to break free of a fast-moving peloton after an hour of racing on the descent towards Tossa de Mar.

The trio were unable to gain more than four minutes on the pack, however, with Rabobank, Milram and Cervelo all looking to take advantage of an uphill finish that would likely work against the hitherto dominant Mark Cavendish.

With 77 kilometres remaining, three became four out front as Euskaltel's Amets Txurruka used the third-category Collsacreu to bridge the gap.

The peloton worked to whittle the gap down, however, and with 30 kilometres remaining had closed to within 1'30" of the leaders.

This was the trigger for Millar to launch a big attack, to which none of the other three reacted immediately.

Txurruka waited again for the final categorised climb of the day, the Côte de la Conreria, to again try and make up ground, while Remi Pauriol (Cofidis) attacked from the peloton.

Txurruka briefly looked to be catching Millar on the descent of the Conreria, though his diminutive stature worked against him on the subsequent flat terrain, and Pauriol joined him before the pair were both caught 10 kilometres from the finish.

Millar, meanwhile, was in full time-trial mode out front, making a highly impressive job of holding out against the combined efforts of the Rabobank, Milram, Cervelo and Liquigas teams.

The Scot began to tire over the last five kilometres though, and he was finally caught at the foot of the uphill climb to Montjuic.

With Cavendish unable to keep pace on the ascent, Freire pushed himself to the fore, though found himself at the front too early with 500 metres remaining.

Fillippo Pozzatto (Katusha) launched his charge on the opposite side, and though Freire managed to drag himself across to the wheel of the Italian, he could do nothing when Hushovd moved out of his slipstream to power his way to the line.

Cavendish finished 16th to conserve his lead in the sprinters' green jersey competition by a single point, with Gerald Ciolek (Milram) 50 points back in third position.

Denis Menchov's (Rabobank) nightmare Tour continued as he rolled in 1'02" off the pace.

  2. Most exciting first week of the TDF in a very long time! Never could figure that one out about how you can't make an educated assessment of the Tour and its riders without being a high level racer. The experts said that Cav was suppose to win that stage and not Millar. and Menchov was suppose to be near the top of the GC and not sitting almost 5 minutes off the pace. I bet that these experts had no idea that Armstrong would be sitting on the same time as the race leader in the first week of the Tour. Although they did cover themselves by expertly saying "You never know what will happen because it is Lance Armstrong" or something similar. Well just so that I don't get accused of not knowing anything about cycling because I'm not part of the 178 people who will be riding in the stage tomorrow, I'm going to go with what Lance himself said. Contrador is going to go off tomorrow and if he can't stay with him that he will sit back and wait for the other contenders to attack. .
Now for the uneducated, fat bottomed, non Tour riding scenario. Many attacks by the GC contenders who need to get back some time all covered by the Astana posse. Cancellara gets dropped. Near the top of the climb Contrador accelerates taking only Sastre with him. Armstrong maintains his position with the remaining leaders. Provided there is no danger of losing the stage to Sastre, the gap between Armstrong and Contrador is maintained at less than 19 seconds to put Armstrong in the yellow at the end of the stage. Contrador has showed that he is the stronger rider and has temporarily "gifted" the lead to Armstrong. The Tour de Astana rolls on.

  3. yeah! the god of thunder strikes in the rain. Good ride from Cav to finish 16th on a day that was not suited to his strengths. He is now only one point ahead of Thor and i think he has realised by now the green jersey is not going to be a walk in the park. tommorrow should be a good day, just hope that the other riders throw in some good attacks and are not intimidated by the astana/disco train that we saw on every mountain stage for seven years.

are you kidding me?! Saying Armstrong is going to beat Cancellara is just about the most obvious statement I have ever heard. But you go ahead and celebrate because in your ridiculous version of the Tour Lance will "crush" Cancellara, 5th (where Lance will finish this year) is better than 65th (where Cancellara finished last year). Meanwhile Contador, Evans, Schleck, Sastre, and maybe a few others will ride over Armstrong. But GO ASTANA! LOOK, it's the kING rising above the horizon!

  14. Hey " 3 PYRAMIDS " i,m surprised you have time to write comments on here during your busy schedule in this years TDF...I mean you must be a professional rider to come across as so high and mighty on here and being childishly rude to people !!! Perhaps you should put the stabilisers back on your tricycle and keep practising !!!

  15. And why on this forum is everyone so concerned about who has raced prior or not. I say whoever says something stupid like "I can tell you never raced" has a small penis.

  16. I would hardly call Millar's escape nail biting. It was over from before it started and anyone who thought it did have any chance at all must really LOOOVE Millar. Hushovd's win on the other hand was great drama to watch and much more of a nail biter. Good on him. As far as tomorrow goes, Armstrong will go out the back at some point and if Evans does not attack his TDF is over for sure. I cannot wait to see if Sastre has another Vesuvius in waiting. And as always I will be looking for the dynamic uphill crash from Menchov.

  19. valiant effort David, would have been nice , like to see Cadel do well tomorrow , but this just isn't going to be his year again, some of you guy's have no idea how stupid you sound , most of you have obviously never rode a bike at a high level , you think your experts , guess what , your not , or you'd be getting your sorry fat arses up the mountain tomorrow with the rest of the peloton.

    From LOOK486, on Thu 9 Jul 8:29PM
  20. Millar almost did it, so close, a brilliant, classy effort, would have been great to see him win today, on wet and dangerous roads. However the victory was also sweet for Hushovd, after so many days of trying! I'm sure we will see more of David and Thor later on in the TdF.

Columbia were handicapped today by that late crash. It seems now the team are both tired and alienated by Cav's remarks a few days ago (also a few hills!) Despite Cav's fantastic talent, he has a few lessons to learn about diplomacy. Now, no other team wants to help Cav and the team in their flat stage efforts. Don't call your rivals 'juniors' please, the other riders have long memories - you need friends in the peloton, it's called give and take, you never know when you may need them, when your own team implodes, on a bad day :)
