Red Bull's Mark Webber topped first practice for Sunday's German Grand Prix, followed by Briton Jenson Button of Brawn.
Webber's best of a minute and 33.082 seconds was 0.3s quicker than Button, who was in turn three-tenths faster than Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.
Massa's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen initially struggled following a rain shower which had ruled out any flying laps until just after the half-hour mark, but recovered to take sixth spot.
Ahead of him were Jarno Trulli of Toyotra and Giancarlo Fisichella of Force India.
Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel, racing at his home grand prix this weekend, suffered an electrical problem at turn one with 35 minutes remaining and only returned to the track in the final moments.
He was eighth behind Williams' Nico Rosberg while the other Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima was ninth after improving from 11th late on.
Tenth was Fernando Alonso of Renault from BMW's Nick Heidfeld, while Rubens Barrichello jumped to 12th with a decent lap after propping up the timesheets for the entire session.
British world champion Lewis Hamilton was 13th after McLaren worked on his rear suspension for the first half of the session, the MP4-24 also sporting a new double diffuser.
Nelson Piquet Jr (Renault), Sebastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso), Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso), Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren), Timo Glock (Toyota) and Adrian Sutil (Force India) completed positions 15 to 20.
Sutil's session ended early thanks to a hydraulics issue which also saw him wheeled off the track at turn one.
