The 15-year old set a new world youth leading time and a personal best of 11.39 seconds as she edged Allison Peter, of the US Virgin Islands, into silver while American Aston Purvis claimed bronze.

However, there was disappointment for Britain's Shaunna Thompson, who finished fourth in 11.63s.

Williams (pictured), from Welwyn Garden City, follows in the footsteps of British team-mate Asha Phillip, who won the world youth title two years ago.

"It's amazing, it's just the best feeling ever. Another personal best and a world leading time, I'm so pleased," she said.

"I didn't think I would be able to do better than the semis, I thought that would be pushing it but then that happened! I'm really in shock.

"This is so important, it's the first step along the line and it's such an amazing feeling to have won. I really wasn't expecting it.

"It's been an incredibly hard year so to do this was really hard. It's the World Juniors next year so I'll be there. I want to carry on and make athletics my career."

Meanwhile, Nathan Wake advanced to the men's 400m final in a personal best 46.86s but Scot Greg Louden failed to progress.

There was also disappointment for Adam Cotton and Rikkie Letch, who didn't make it through their 800m semi-finals.

And Myra Perkins, who qualifiedfor the hammer final with the fourth best throw, could not recapture that form when it mattered and finished ninth, with a best effort of 52.44m.
