Bayern struggle to cup success

Sun 10 Aug, 10:17 PM

Bayern Munich opened their defence of their DFB-Pokal crown with a 4-3 victory at Rot-Weiss Erfurt in Jurgen Klinsmann's first game.Bayern, who also won the Bundesliga last season, were expected to crush their third division opponents but met surprising levels of resistance as the hosts levelled on three occasions before Toni Kroos grabbed the winner with 10 minutes to go.

Philipp Lahm opened the scoring for Bayern early on, but Massimo Cannizzaro levelled for the home side after 12 minutes.

Lukas Podolski put Bayern ahead again within 60 seconds, but half-time substitute Albert Bunjaku levelled two minutes into the second half.

Bunjaku restored parity again in the 67th minute after Miroslav Klose had put the Bavarians ahead for the third time 10 minutes earlier.

But man-of-the-match Kroos netted the winner after 80 minutes to spare Bayern's blushes.

Bayern's win meant that all 18 Bundesliga clubs progressed into the second round this weekend.

Earlier on Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen also won the hard way as they needed extra time to defeat third division side Rot-Weiss Oberhausen.

Renato Augusto appeared to have given Leverkusen the win in the 69th minute, but an equaliser from Julian Luttmann deep into stoppage time forced the extra period.

Goals from Theofanis Gekas and Patrick Helmes were enough to see Leverkusen through after Mike Terranova had put the home side on the verge of a shock.

The 2007 finalists Stuttgart cruised past Hansa Luneberg 5-0 while Karlsruhe chalked up the same scoreline at Ansbach.

Wolfsburg defeated Heidenheim 3-0 and Hoffenheim's debut as a representative of the Bundesliga ended in a 1-0 triumph at Chemitz.

Arminia Bielefeld struggled to a 2-1 win at Durlach.

The Bundesliga clubs will be joined in the second round by second division sides Duisburg, Wehen and 1860 Munich, who all defeated lower-league opposition, but Nurnberg needed a penalty shootout to knock out Rot-Weiss Ahlen.

FC Oberneuland from the fourth division upset second division Koblenz to put their name in the next round and become the lowest-ranked club left in the competition.
