Sir Alex Ferguson still intends to buy a new striker this week - and has failed to rule out a shock move for Thierry Henry.
With Louis Saha written out of his plans and Wayne Rooney only just returned to training after picking up a virus in Nigeria, the Manchester United boss had only Carlos Tevez to call on for Sunday's Community Shield win over Portsmouth at Wembley.
Tevez responded with a man-of-the-match display containing everything but a goal as United triumphed in a penalty shoot-out.
But Ferguson admits getting a forward in time for Sunday's Barclays Premier League opener with Newcastle is now a pressing concern.
"It has been pressing since the end of last season," said the Scot.
"We like to operate with four strikers and we have not been able to do that."
There is bound to be fresh speculation over a move for Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov, while Karim Benzema, David Villa and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have also been linked with Old Trafford over the last few months.
Henry's name has just been added to that list despite the 31-year-old's obvious link with Arsenal.
Tellingly, it was an issue Ferguson chose to skirt round rather than reject.
"There is a name every day," he said.
"I can't answer the question because I don't have the right answer.
"It is possible I will sign someone this week. We are trying and we are looking at one or two options.
"Hopefully we will get something done."

HAHA Rooney most overated player? Lets see England play without Rooney and we will see whos overrated. Rooney is England's best player, all pundits think so and so do most of the real fans. If Rooney is overrated that must mean Gerrard, Hargreaves, Ferdinand are overrated? Why dont u ask Gerrard, him a Wayne have been mates for ages.
i hope fergie get henry...i do think that by getting berbatov, huntelaar, benzema or eto will disrupt the balance of the team. coz they are still young n would become unhappy if left out on the bench. go get henry...he's still good at 31..
Paul, shut up! Rooney hasn't peaked yet, and it if he has been overrated, it's for real cause! Tell me who else at the age of 16yrs old plays in the Premiership for a club as tall as Everton was when he started there? At 18(I think) he joined the Reds as the starting 11. Recovering from a metatarsal injury faster than anyone (never mind that the injury put most out of their careers) ... the lad is a fighter.
Therry is good, and has skills. However he is a bit too old to look for long term United commitment. I'd suggest a mid-to-late 20s. Maybe Ferguson should look into getting those young lads at the Academy/Reserves a more professional try into the starting 11.
man u fans cudnt complain if they got henry afterall they payed £28 mill for the most over rated striker ever in rooney lol. peaked already at a young age haha.
I am an Ardent Arsenal fan and i just cant look away from the Man U build there team.4 Strikers and Saha is not even in reckoning, that is what it takes to be a champ.
Mr Wenger should ask just 1 question. What happens if Adebayor got injured or experiences a goal drought (God forbid),who will replace him.Wenger should buy an experienced Striker and an experienced Midlefielder to manage for the season,we have a good first 11,our problem has always been dept and Mr wenger should realise that otherwise he will be another nealy Year
Henry is a dying Horse. Fergie get wonder boy Eto and you would have gottn u a jewel.
Benzema is the boy he's only 20 and put 2 away for Lyon tonight.
Best bet would be Berbatov, but I reckon Utd will try their hand on Huntelaar aswel...
Henry isnt in line with SAF`s youth policy. At 31, a tad too old for Utd, Plus hes past his best, the Arse had the best of him. Out of the names mentioned....probably Berbatov is the best of the bunch?
HENRY TO MAN U? THIERRY? NO, PROBABLY NOT:
1. Henry's about as injury prone as Saha at the moment. six of one and half a dozen of the other?
2. Barca's too short in the striker's dept at the moment to let him depart.
3,000,000. Henry would NEVER do that to Arsenal. Why, that's akin to ADULTERY!
Or would he?
Why not he was class at Arsenal and i can see him being a huge success if he came to United but dont think it will happen Huntelaar is my prefered choice.
it will be like Raul play for Barc, or Maldini play for Inter
please god noooooo
Not gonna get Henry due to age along with all the other obvious reasons.
More than likley we'll go for Huntelaar as he's got potential to improve, can be bought at a decent price and won't mind sitting a few games on the bench.
not henry
