Championship - Morrison at the double for Coventry

Roy Keane's Ipswich suffered a 2-1 defeat at Coventry in their Championship opener at the Ricoh Arena.

Clinton Morrison celebrates scoring for Coventry against Ipswich in their Championship opener at the Ricoh Arena. - 0

All three goals came in the first half, with Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison collecting an eye-catching brace for Coventry, before Jonathan Walters responded for Ipswich.

Keane's visitors pushed hard for an equaliser after the break, but a combination of fine goalkeeping from Keiren Westwood and poor finishing ensured Chris Coleman's City took maximum points.

Ipswich started purposefully, but fell behind on 10 minutes when a long clearance from Westwood led to indecision at the back.

Richard Wright rushed to clear, but Morrison beat him to the ball on the left edge of the penalty area and pulled away before curling a superb shot into the opposite top corner.

The goal gave the home side an immediate lift and it was no surprise when they doubled their advantage 15 minutes later.

Isaac Osbourne was the provider, whipping in an inviting right-cross that saw Morrison dive in front of his marker and steer a rocket header past Wright at his near post from 12 yards.

Ipswich were rocking, but a lapse in concentration from the City defence saw them pull a goal back almost immediately when Lee Martin played in Walters with a straightforward pass.

Walters had the time and space to compose himself, before firing a crisp finish past the advancing Westwood from just outside the penalty area.

The visitors had chances to level before half-time, with Martin guilty of a weak effort after making space inside the box.

Keane's men came out for the second half like men possessed and had a superb chance to equalise on 50 minutes.

Jonathan Stead played in Jaime Peters, but the Canadian international was denied by a sharp save from Westwood with his deflected effort heading for the bottom corner.

On 70 minutes Walters let fly from distance and watched his curling effort fly inches wide of the post.

Pim Balkestein then sent a looping header on target, only to be denied by Morrison on the goal line.

Ipswich pressed hard in the closing minutes, but Coventry held firm to deny Keane the start to the new season he wanted.
