Premier League - Countdown: Everton

Eurosport - Mon, 10 Aug 15:49:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! continues its countdown to the Premiership season with a look at Everton.

2009-2010 Everton Tim Howard - 0

Last 10 Seasons in Premier League (1999/2000 to 2008/2009): 13/16/15/7/17/4/11/6/5/5

Mikel Arteta - Marouane Fellaini - Tim Cahill - Steven Pienaar

Jo - Louis Saha

BACK-UPS FROM: Carlo Nash, Iain Turner, Shkodran Mustafi, Tony Hibbert, Joseph Yobo, Seamus Coleman, Dan Gosling, Leon Osman, Anton Peterlin, Jack Rodwell, James Wallace, James Vaughan, Yakubu Ayegbeni, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Victor Anichebe, Kieran Agard, Jose Baxter

TRANSFERS:

In - Anton Peterlin (Ventura County Fusion, free), Jo (Manchester City, loan), Shkodran Mustafi (Hamburg, free)

Out - John Ruddy (Motherwell, loan), Lars Jacobsen (Blackburn, free), Nuno Valente, Andy van der Meyde (both released)

POSITIVES: In David Moyes, the Toffees have one of the best managers in the Premier League, and the only way he will leave Goodison Park is if a bigger club comes calling. Moyes has built a compact squad full of intelligent, versatile players. The admirable way Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini filled-in last season when the club had no fit strikers exemplified this can-do attitude. In Jack Rodwell and Dan Gosling, they have two of the Premier League's best young players.

NEGATIVES: Chairman Bill Kenwright has voiced his concern that Everton may struggle without a billionaire benefactor, and there is a danger they have reached their ceiling. Manchester City loom menacingly, threatening Everton's top-six position and bidding for their top defender Joleon Lescott. With Phil Jagielka still out injured, Lescott's departure would be a disaster.

VERDICT: This season could be a battle of oragnisation and drive against sheer financial muscle. As much as it is gratifying to see a team like Everton succeed in the modern game, this could be the season they slip out of the European places. 8th.

  2. I think you're still 2-3 years away from it, but Liverpool are not so far from crashing. When Gerrard slows down, where do they go? They won't have the cash to replace them unless another rich benefactor comes in and cleans their debts. United have more debt, but much more young talent than Liverpool. Personally, I think they're closer to just dropping like a rock than any of the top 4, provided Arsenal hold on to Fabregas. Cheers.

they might break into the top 4 BUT if they give away fabregas or gallas they might not even be garenteed top 7 and im sorry mate but its a FACT....hands down....case sorted..FTM

  4. Why do the press always underate Everton? I think they have a strong a chance as anyone. I'm hoping that Everton, Spurs, Man City and ofcourse Villa will be stronger this year so that one of us can break the monopoly.
    Good Luck Everton.

  5. Im a everton supporter and i think we are a good unit and have true pride that the things is lacking of City because they will just try for money.
Tottenham are a good team but are on and off all the time though villa are the same kind of team where they played good in the beginning but dry up in the end.
Everton might even beat Arsenal to 4th.
    Everton- 4th Aston Villa- 5th Tottenham- 6th Manchester City- 7th Fulham- 8th

  6. to me everton should have signed a right sided midfield winger and allow arteta to move more into the middle to control the game, allowing fellaini to sit or join. pienaar I dont really rate but he's doing a good enough job and would even out the side. the back 4 and keeper are set. and Id play cahill as a 2nd striker number 10 position who could link up midfield and attack with this then Id probably use Yakubu as a target man who could hold up the ball letting cahill and the midfield join.

Joaquim would have been a good signing for this to happe,

pretty devent team though but not enough depth in centre park to get above 6th at best.

  7. Let's not forget Tim Howard!!! He comes up big nearly every game. Him saving goals means one less the forwards have to score!!!

  9. Everton WILL be in the top 5 again this season....one of the smallest squads in the premiership, but the biggest heart and best manager! Jo, Yakubu and Saha will score goals! Fellaini and Cahill will always weigh in with their fair share. If we can keep players fit we will give most teams a go. I believe our team is stronger than last season. Players like Rodwell and Pienaar will improve and we still have Arteta and Jags to come back ( our 2 best players ). Our manager does things the right way as far as transfers our concerned and we will add a couple of top quality players to our squad before the transfer deadline. In Moyes we trust! ' Money Bags ' City could never buy what we have. COYB!!

  10. Sean has no idea of football at all. Arsenal btw 3rd and 8th. Over the seasons, how many of these so called 'top 4 breakers' can actually match the play of the gunners? Save a few blunders last season, the likes of City, Hull, Stoke should not have beaten them. I do not think the gunners will finish outside top4 though. The only sale that may affect them is the sale of Toure but that of Ade was good. He is a one season wonder. I remember his words "pay me like Henry and I will play like Henry". Henry did much for the club and committed himself despite seasons of courting by Barca. His head did not turn until he felt it good to leave. Arsenal are being written off once again and maybe, just maybe some will bite the dust!

  11. What planet are you on if you think spurs are a threat to the top6?? As for man @#$% all the money cant bring you team spirit which has kept the blue boys threatening thet top 4 monopoly. Danger is from Villa!
Keep Artie and the yak fit and we'll be knocking on that door once again!
    In moyes we trust

  12. I don't see that Everton are any weaker than last season. Villa are certainly not as good, Man City lack depth Spurs are the only one that might stop them getting 5th.

  14. Personally I think the fight for the Europa League spots looks pretty interesting between Villa, Spurs, Man City & the Toffees. Lets face it Man City aren't gonna break into the top four this year, and need to quickly organise themselves to get a top six place. Everton are a decent side I truly admire how much they achieve with so little financial backing (and I'm a Liverpool fan too) but its gonna be tough to stay in the top six this season Villa and Spurs would be my bets for the fifth and sixth placings, seventh or eighth sounds about right.

From James, on Mon 10 Aug 11:05AM
  15. Looks like Lescott is staying so he will be going into my fantasy team for this season. Everton will finish in the top six we have players who are improving all the time, onlookers forget that. People see the big names at city and expect success. Tottenham have had plenty of good signings over the past few years they always underperform. Man City also lack depth, should a few stars become injured their back to square one.

  16. Everton need to strenghen their squad but with Arteta and the Yak back they will be a force! It'll be a good fight between Villa, Spurs, Everton and City for 5th and 6th. City won't finish in the top 4 btw!

  18. Woo, way to be negative! And as we finished 5th in the Premiership, surely Man City are "threatening our top-five position"?
