Eurosport - Mon, 10 Aug 14:05:00 2009
The results are in and we can reveal that, according to Eurosport-Yahoo! readers, the greatest ever Manchester United player is... George Best.
The twinkle-toed Northern Irishman was our top pick and you agreed but only just with 25 per cent of you plumping for Best ahead of the 23 per cent who went for Eric Cantona.
Next came Cristiano Ronaldo on 19 per cent which proves he still has plenty of admirers despite having departed for Real Madrid this summer.
Loyal winger Ryan Giggs came next on 17 per cent while Bobby Charlton chipped in with 12 per cent of the vote.
Duncan Edwards and Denis Law (two per cent each) are perhaps victims of time while Bryan Robson's terrible managerial career might have clouded some memories of his playing days - hence his one per cent total.
But Best is your man. The creative, yet flawed, genius who won two league titles, a European Cup and the Ballon d'Or, is the greatest player to have ever worn the red at Old Trafford.
As they say in Belfast: "Maradona good, Pele better, George Best!"
Eurosport-Yahoo! verdict:
1 - George Best
2 - Eric Cantona
3 - Denis Law
Readers' verdict:

3 - Cristiano Ronaldo 19%

Here is how some of you made a case for your favourites:
Ida Futstein: Pele once signed an autograph for George Best with the words "from the second best footballer in the world". If Pele thought George Best was the greatest footballer in the world, how could he not be the greatest footballer in the history of Manchester United?
Aleksicn93: It has to be Bobby Charlton, mainly due to what he's been through in the Munich air disaster, and how he recovered to become our top scorer of all time, and how he led us to European glory. One cannot forget his years of service and loyal support of the club. Mr. Manchester United indeed.
Alec897: George Best was the greatest because he was a first. The first superstar footballer, the first player of his kind. He is criticised for his later problems but I'd like to see anybody handle being lofted to the dizzy heights that he experienced.
Pshort: I've followed United since 1962 and I can tell you that Cantona is not fit to lace the boots of Law, Best or Charlton. Frenchie only stayed five seasons and managed to bring the club's name, and football in general, into disrepute. Of all the players I've seen since 1962 the top three are the "Holy Trinity" in any order you like.
Willthered: The greatest player ever to grace a football pitch in my lifetime has to be the late George Best, a player who excelled in all facets of the game and who in today's silly priced market would just be impossible to value.
Uctsoulja: CR7 will always be the best player Manchester United has seen! It's a pity that, now after he has left, no one can say anything about Cristiano, without referring to his diving, sulking, and on the field antics. What about his goals, his entertaining footy, what about the fear he put into defenders? Who? And I repeat who will be able to put the fear of god into defences as Cristiano Ronaldo has done? CR7 - Will always be the best!
Shujaahmad200: Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane as honourable mentions? What a disgrace!? I think you should extend the list pronto to include these true greats! Schmeichel was arguably the greatest keeper that ever lived and Scholes is the best natural talent that England has produced in the last 20 years. And Roy Keane? No need to say anything!
The_rogue_unknown: I picked Eric Cantona. I was about 12-13 years old when I started watching Man U games (I'm American). I totally fell in love with the team and Cantona who was like a God on the field.

BEST IS BEST!
David Beckham should have been on the list. I would have picked Eric Cantona myself, but Becks would have certainly racked up a decent number of votes.
Stephenbyrne50. T W A T Gerrard kisse the camera but no trophy. He dis - graced the Old Trafford Turf you Scouse @#$% got
its all a load of rubbish
Denis Law & Martin Buchan.
as a french guy,i always bein surprised that you english guys called canto " THE KING",that defo show how you respected him and loved him and i m so proud to be french just for that, when canto signed to man utd from leeds(if i remember),i ve bein a fan of man u right away.but in fookin frog land they never used to talk bout premiership at the time and couldn t watch the games really so i had teletext runnin on my TV lol just to see the result but could watch the champions league campaign all the time man u was playin.
to me GEORGE BEST and SIR BOBBY were phenomenal and georgie deserve to b number one cause as he passed away we can say he s a true legend.
but canto made man utd how it is today,he was passionate bout man utd and defo an exemple as he was always first to come and last to leave the training ground everyday.
he always said that there is only one team he would coach and it s man utd ;)
right now he s french beach soccer team coach lol.i love him.
go man utd.
I watched George Best in his 1st game and many many times both home and away as I rarely missed a game in those days. I have also seen nearly all of Ronaldo's games for Utd. In my opinion Ronaldo is not even in the same class as George Best.
cantona is still the king
Is that the best you can do? Bitter Blue!
denis law, denis law,he put you down in 74
c.t.i.d
BIG CHIEF you prattt just coz ronaldo left doesnt mean we never made him the world playerof the year and doesnt mean he wasnt amazing in our shirt were not bitter idiots like liverpool fans, take gerrard had he gone to chelsea a few years ago he would have won the premier league he stayed with u divs and has never come close to winnin epl
??? Cristiano Ronaldo 3rd place at 19% votes. No believe this!!!
Truly! Best is Best!!! 100%
What about david may!?
ryan robson was @#$%. but his brother bryan was quite good.
BEST IS BEST, FANTASTIC WELL DESERVED, AND CANTONA SECOND.
CR7 WOULD BE VOTED THE BEST EVER IF HE HAD SHOWN MORE LOYALTY TO MAN UTD!
HE IS THE MOST TALENTED BUT MANY FANS DON'T FORGIVE HIM.
He wouldn't have had the balls to punch him if he hadn't got his scummy mates with him - you @#$%-head!
'stephenbyrne50', Steven Gerrard isn't even the best player to 'grace' that shitheap Anfield. He should have been gracing the inside of a prison cell, if it hadn't been for a bunch of bent, scouse, jurists!
ryan giggs should have won. by miles.
This poll's votes were by anyone who had access to Eurosport-Yahoo. So the knobhead who calls himself BIG CHIEF, should get his facts right. He also claims that he's not a fan of northern teams - so that tells me, he knows sod all about football. There's only one TURD on this commentary board - and it's him!
