Premier League - Defoe fighting to make opener
PA Sport - Tue, 10 Aug 09:14:00 2010
Tottenham assistant manager Joe Jordan hopes Jermain Defoe will win his fitness battle to face Manchester City in the opening game of the new Premier League season.
The striker is carrying a minor groin problem which forced him out of the friendly win over Fiorentina.
However, Jordan hopes the England forward, who was not included in Fabio Capello's squad to face Hungary, can shake it off in time to tackle City at White Hart Lane and to face Swiss side Young Boys in next week's crucial Champions League qualifier.
"I don't think it is anything serious," Jordan said. "Jermain went for a scan and there is an ever so slight tear there.
"It is more precaution than anything. I think he should be all right. We have had to hold him back. He was desperate to train in the latter part of last week but he was pulled out.
"We are hoping that some time this week he will be back in training with the lads."

Paul F....Typical response for a man city fan of today, if it dont go ur way throw money at it, or make up some lame excuse as to why man city have lost almost all their friendly matches.
Spurs will be strong, stronger than last year, and how many times did u beat us last year?, oh wait, u did'nt did u. Man City probably will finish in the top six, but below 4th, that will be about ur stamp for the coming season and by then the rich boys of man city will lost the will to live after watching u fail, especially after they've spent millions on this nothing team. They'll sell up after the novalty wares off, then you'll be in so much debt because of player wages, you'll be a nothing team again.
@Paul F
So you are saying that because those 5 players you named havn't even played in pre season the friendlies you lost don't mean anything. So the other thing your saying is these players havn't even played together yet. Lets hope they can play together then, last I heard, football teams win through teamwork.
City seem to ahve gone backwards?
That'll be after us strengthening most of out weak areas?
Midfield guile? Check - David Silva.
Full backs? Check - Boateng and Kolarov.
Box to box midfielder? Check - Yaya Toure.
What some idiots like this DipDipDipstick) seem to forget is that City haven't fielded the above players, along with the living legend that is Carlos Tevez, in pre season.
Centre half is still a slight concern, however, but Crocuh won't be as effective as he'll be spending most of his time scratching his itchy nads.
Massive game for Spurs. They outplayed City at Eastlands at the end of last season, their best players (Bale and Modric) didn't have to play at the awful world cup, and City seem to have gone backwards over the summer, so I expect Spurs to win. They'll be strong at home again this season.
