The Hanover keeper is not expected to return until after the German winter break, when the season re-starts in January.

He will definitely miss the World Cup qualifiers against Russia and Wales on Saturday and Wednesday.

"He noticed that his hand was hurting when he moved it in a certain way," explained Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff. "Primarily, we thought it could be a dislocation, but the doctors performed further tests this morning and they showed that he has a scaphoid fracture.

"We must now consult with a hand specialist to see if he needs an operation or if he can be treated more conservatively."

Enke has kept goal in all three of Germany's matches since Jens Lehmann's retirement following Euro 2008.

Germany coach Joachim Loew will now have to choose between uncapped reserve goalkeepers Rene Adler and Tim Wiese for the match against Russia in Dortmund.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Michael Rensing and Valencia's Timo Hildebrand were not called up to the squad.
