Fofonov gets three-month dope ban

Kazakh rider Dimitri Fofonov has been suspended for three months after he tested positive for the stimulant heptaminol during this year's Tour de France.

"I was told two days ago I was suspended for three months," Fofonov said, saying he did not know the banned substance was in a drug given to him by his doctor to fight cramp.

Almaty-born Fofonov rode for the Credit Agricole team in this year's Tour, finishing in 19th position in the overall standings, just behind Russian team-mate Alexandre Botcharov.

However, the 32-year-old was suspended from the team following the positive test results.

  1. make them all use herbal medications - maybe then there will be no doctors to use anything which has unknown ingredients
