Kazakh rider Dimitri Fofonov has been suspended for three months after he tested positive for the stimulant heptaminol during this year's Tour de France.
"I was told two days ago I was suspended for three months," Fofonov said, saying he did not know the banned substance was in a drug given to him by his doctor to fight cramp.
Almaty-born Fofonov rode for the Credit Agricole team in this year's Tour, finishing in 19th position in the overall standings, just behind Russian team-mate Alexandre Botcharov.
However, the 32-year-old was suspended from the team following the positive test results.
