Three riders escaped early but were caught by the peloton with 20 kilometers left of the race, with Khalilov taking his fifth win of the season after escaping in the final kilometer.

Khalilov held off the chasing group in the climb up to the finish in the centre of Peccioli, with Filippo Pozzato second and Stefano Garzelli finishing in third.

It was a good day for CSC, with Alexandr Kolobnev finishing fifth.

Team CSC Saxo Bank's sports director Kim Andersen said: "After the first break was caught there were several other attempts and we had one of our guys there almost every time.

"In the end a group of 20 was formed in which we had both Jurgen van Goolen and our two stagiaires Jakob Fuglsang and Laurent Didier. All in all a very nice effort by our guys."

The race was held on a circuit around Peccioli in Toscana, with the riders doing three laps of 12.2km before a 12.3km finishing circuit covered four times.
