Former England defender Paul Parker does not think Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard should both play Saturday's World Cup qualifier.
"It is depressing to hear that Fabio Capello is probably going to play both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in central midfield against Kazakhstan.
As far as I'm concerned, it has to be one or the other. They have played together so many times and it just hasn't happened.
Playing well for your club doesn't mean you will play well for your country, and they just can't seem to get the best out of each other.
It seems that successive England managers simply haven't been able to resist the lure of picking the big-name midfielders; Gerrard, Lampard and David Beckham.
Capello's side played so well in Croatia without the injured Gerrard - why would you drop Gareth Barry, who gives the England midfield so much more balance?
I think the best thing for players' and fans' confidence is to stick with what has worked well rather than tinkering and putting yourself under pressure.
Players like it when the team is settled - more so if they are in the team, obviously! - and they can play a few matches in the same system.
Continuity is a tremendous asset, and when the team are coming off a great performance the manager can afford to keep faith with his players.
I am a huge fan of Gerrard and would normally favour him ahead of Lampard, but on the back of the Croatia result the best thing would be to leave him on the bench.
As I said, it should always be Gerrard or Lampard, not Gerrard and Lampard.
What kind of a message does it send to Barry if he plays brilliantly and then immediately gets axed? It will dishearten him and make him think he can never establish himself.
I would also keep Theo Walcott in after his hat-trick in Zagreb. It is important not to put too much pressure on him, but he is so quick and is one of the few England players that can get in behind defenders.
I don't see Michael Owen's absence as a big factor. He can still contribute and might have been worth a place on the bench, but he doesn't have the electric pace of old.
Compare the work rate and all-around contribution of Emile Heskey with Owen - there's no contest. And with Peter Crouch back in the squad we have a good option in reserve who offers something different.
Heskey has a remarkable ability to help his strike partner flourish - Wayne Rooney looked better against Croatia than he has for years in an England shirt.
I don't think it's any coincidence that he was playing in a front two alongside Heskey.
We might not know much about Kazakhstan, but they will be no pushovers.
They conceded a respectable 21 goals from 14 games in Euro 2008, so we shouldn't expect them to be a San Marino.
They will sit back and make England beat them, and will be delighted to take a 0-0 draw home.
Nevertheless, I think that if England, with their new-found confidence, can make an early breakthrough, they should win comfortably.
My prediction is a 3-0 win at Wembley, with Capello's side able to travel to Belarus in good heart."

Lumpy needs to loose a few pork pies before he dons the tree lions shirt that would teach him some respect for his position and his fellow players :-)
#39 Jean J are you French or blind a 2 - 0 win over Andora Arms XI pub team is hardly emphatically doing quite well it is pathetic !
Looking forward to Germany beating Russia tomorrow :-)
why is everyone banging on about Lampard and Gerrard when the whole team is @#$%? England have just failed to qualify for a major tournament you cant blame just two of them. Mark my words, it'll only get worse over the next few years where are the new players going to come from?
who cares? its only kazakhstan, even with gerrard and lampard they should be able to win them, its safe enough to test it out
Paul Parker is as good a columnmist as he was a player mediocre, how can he suggest that Cappelo leave probably the best mid-fielder in the world on the bench durrrr
The reason Gerrard and Lampard haven't worked together in the past is because Lampard hasn't the footballing brain to realise that when Gerrard goes forward he should stay and hold but he doesen't so when Gerrard realises there is a gaping hole through the midfield he dosen't go forward which then makes him in-effective. Its bloody simple so why can't these over paid managers (£4.5 million) a year realise that and put it right by explaining this simple tactic to Lampard and then England will have the benefit of both these talented players.
I do wish Paul Parker would get a job in football again. He really doesn't have the experience in the current game to be so openly critical of people who have remained more successful than he ever was.
Wind yer neck in for a bit Parker. I'm sick of you.
All Parker does is come out of his black box and makes comments that totally lack thought and then.........he runs off back into his box!!!!!! Until the next batch of @#$%.
well said paul g
LOL at comment 51. You sir obviously dont know much about sport in general let alone football, even if someone is rated world class doesnt mean they are unbeatable in any sport/profession/way of life and also doesnt mean they will win either. As usual with England they will make the task of winning harder than it is because of WEmbley and the fans expectations, dont forget we played in Croatia last time. Parker is right, how can u guys argue with someone who has played for Manchester United and England? On current form Lampard is the man for the job he has helped Chelsea so far this season with excellent performances, Stevie G has done ok but Torres is the real driiving force for Liverpool atm. I also think Defoe should play as he is so electric in front of goal right now.
This is what is wrong with English football. Too to**ers who know how it 'should be done' and no-one who can do it.
Parker again... Jesus, doesn't he has anything else to do.He lives to Eurosport studio or something?
England are @#$% at Football,Tennis,Cricket and Banking.
England are good at Rugby, tiddlywinks, quadraplegic hurdles and bringing back Peter Mandelson.
Never mind the FOOT BOLL-OLL-OX
451 with barry and both of them will work.
Much of the problem when playing gerrard and lampard together is that 1 of them will have excessive defensive duties and hence hampering their attacking qualities. But if u throw barry in then u must play rooney by himself.
Another problem is Gerrard and his love for long balls, he isn't on the same wavelength as lampard. I would prefer it if gerrard is placed on the bench.
it's pretty weak of paul parker and anyone else to suggest that kazakhstan should not be an easy team to beat. everyone always talks and gets excited about england having what it takes to do well whenever there's an international competition, so you must expect them to annihilate a lowly team like kazakhstan. any other world class country could and would smash them to pieces, so if england are world class, they should also.
Last point, for those who love to mention how much these" overpaid players make", it almost seems like jealousy, and it seems like bcos of it ppl think those players should have to put up with whatever. Hey, thats the pay structure of the business they are in! Brasil, Portugal, France and Spain as well as many other countries have super rich players and succeed or at least play beautiful football so the overpaid issue isnt the problem. MAKE A STAND AND STOP BUYING PAPERS THAT TREAT THE NATIONAL GAME LIKE A MONEY MAKING VENTURE! and AS LONG AS THE PLAYERS ARE TRYING, SHOW THEM LOVE! also STOP SUPPORTING THE IDEA OF IDOLS AND REALIZE NO ONE SHOULD BE PLAYED IF RECENT FORM DOESNT SUPPORT IT!
As for the Steven/ Lampard issue- new mngr so tho its bin tried before it hasnt by him maybe he has the skills to make them work well together! Take hope from Chelseki, tho i hate them:
I agree with benak77 ... he talks a lot more sense than 'turn my back on the ball' Parker ... perhaps Yahoo could offer him a job instead?
Paul Parker is that much of a footballing 'legend' he has to resort to breakdancing on Soccer AM to get noticed ...
What a plum!
Any mediocre England team should beat Khazakstan ... with or without Gerrard or Lampard ... why has he made a blunder? The team hasn't even been announced yet?
Another case of Paul 'turns his back on the ball' Parker talking @#$%!

England supporters are passionate ppl-fact! however, they remind me of Newcastle fans, bcos they still think of their team when they were in better times and their expectation isnt realistically linked to recent performances. A few ppl on here have mentioned stability and continuity as necesary elements for success but can there ever really be either when the prevailing attitude toward the team and manager is one akin to a witch hunt, put heavy rocks on them , throw em in deep water and if they float, theyre definetly witches and we burn em and if they sink and drown then they werent but its 2 late. The media itself approaches the whole thing like a west end producer cos the more turmoil the more sales! The question is "does England truly understand what support means?!" There is something truly insiduous about the "support" givien to sportsmen and women in England. The Managers job is a poisened chalice and woe to the fool who sips from the cup! e.g Bring in a new manager to make some changes that the previous inefective mngr couldnt,(Capello sidelines Owen to try something new), and already he's tactically inept? u cant win!!!
We know Barry and Gerrard work, we know that Barry and Lampard work, but if we can get Barry Lampard and Gerrard working I think its a fair call to give it a shot against Kazaksthan, espically as Capello hasn't tried it that much.
