World Cup qual. - Parker: Capello's midfield blunder

Eurosport - Fri, 10 Oct 13:37:00 2008

Former England defender Paul Parker does not think Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard should both play Saturday's World Cup qualifier.

2007 England Frank Lampard Steven Gerrard another fine mess - 0

"It is depressing to hear that Fabio Capello is probably going to play both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in central midfield against Kazakhstan.

As far as I'm concerned, it has to be one or the other. They have played together so many times and it just hasn't happened.

Playing well for your club doesn't mean you will play well for your country, and they just can't seem to get the best out of each other.

It seems that successive England managers simply haven't been able to resist the lure of picking the big-name midfielders; Gerrard, Lampard and David Beckham.

Capello's side played so well in Croatia without the injured Gerrard - why would you drop Gareth Barry, who gives the England midfield so much more balance?

I think the best thing for players' and fans' confidence is to stick with what has worked well rather than tinkering and putting yourself under pressure.

Players like it when the team is settled - more so if they are in the team, obviously! - and they can play a few matches in the same system.

Continuity is a tremendous asset, and when the team are coming off a great performance the manager can afford to keep faith with his players.

I am a huge fan of Gerrard and would normally favour him ahead of Lampard, but on the back of the Croatia result the best thing would be to leave him on the bench.

As I said, it should always be Gerrard or Lampard, not Gerrard and Lampard.

What kind of a message does it send to Barry if he plays brilliantly and then immediately gets axed? It will dishearten him and make him think he can never establish himself.

I would also keep Theo Walcott in after his hat-trick in Zagreb. It is important not to put too much pressure on him, but he is so quick and is one of the few England players that can get in behind defenders.

I don't see Michael Owen's absence as a big factor. He can still contribute and might have been worth a place on the bench, but he doesn't have the electric pace of old.

Compare the work rate and all-around contribution of Emile Heskey with Owen - there's no contest. And with Peter Crouch back in the squad we have a good option in reserve who offers something different.

Heskey has a remarkable ability to help his strike partner flourish - Wayne Rooney looked better against Croatia than he has for years in an England shirt.

I don't think it's any coincidence that he was playing in a front two alongside Heskey.

We might not know much about Kazakhstan, but they will be no pushovers.

They conceded a respectable 21 goals from 14 games in Euro 2008, so we shouldn't expect them to be a San Marino.

They will sit back and make England beat them, and will be delighted to take a 0-0 draw home.

Nevertheless, I think that if England, with their new-found confidence, can make an early breakthrough, they should win comfortably.

My prediction is a 3-0 win at Wembley, with Capello's side able to travel to Belarus in good heart."

  1. Kazakhstan being, 'no pushovers'; what planet are you on? Ranked 131st in the world, alongside those footballing giants of Namibia and Kuwait, and you expect us to swallow that piece of outrageous spin? England will beat Kazakhstan comfortably, by a minimum of 4 goals - and i don't even get paid for that prediction!

  2. Hang on, isn't this coming from Paul Parker who never put a foot wrong? Oh no, wait a minute, he did, specifically in the world cup semi final against the Germans, when not only did he put a foot wrong, he turned his back and created a goal - for Germany. Legend

  3. All you 'intelligent' people who slate Paul for his articles and opinions should step back and take a look at themselves. Nobody asked you all to:- [A] read the article and [B] comment on it. Especially if you have any integrity and mean the nonsense you post.
if you dont like his articles be clever and dont read them. They may not be inspired or revolutionary but I dont mind them - football is about different opinions after all - good or bad. what i dont understand is why some people waste energy having such strong opinions about someone or something they clearly dont like or have an interest in. Get a life

  4. Both Great players but both play a similar role is why it dont work, maybe Gerrard could play a more forward role like he does sometimes for Liverpool either that or they dont play together!

Lets face it this should be a game England win 6 - 0 but instead they pick team that has not worked in the past, does not work now and will never work in the future :-)

  7. Lets be relaistic, Both Lampard and Gerrard are great players, but for me its got to be one or the other, and Gerrarrd has to be in the starling XI, Lamps on the bench! No one in the england team, can do what Gerrard does!

  8. while i can't understand why paul parkers opinion is valued by eurosport so often on this occasion i partly agree with him. team should be picked on merit. keep the midfield the same but i'd play gerrard with rooney up front. gerrard and rooney can both score and while i like defoe for portsmouth he frustrates me every time he plays for england because he misses too many simple chances. crouch only really any use for holding ball up or when style needs to be changed. his height is his disadvantage, it slows him down and he cant jump without climbing on defenders shoulders so gives away too many freekicks. plus for someone so tall he can't head the ball properly. look to carew and koller for examples of using height to advantage

  9. I agree with lordofjapes - Paul Parker's opinions are empty and dull. After all the criticism of team selection, nice to see him u-turn into predicting a 3-0 win.......

  12. I didn't realise Paul Parker has managed a team to three consecutive champions league finals, won premier league titles in two different countries with four different teams, took a team on an unbeaten run of 54 games and 964 minutes without conceding a goal.

Oh no wait that's Fabio Capello!!!

So easy to get confused when Parker is clearly such a football manager genius

  15. Spain showed in the Euros that you don't need to start your best players, but strategically bring them off the bench to finish off matches like Fabregas did. In a game against Kazakhstan it shouldn't really be important, but this is the kind of system i think Capello will consider in the bigger games.

  16. I agree about Paul Parker i am a qpr fan so for me he was a legend but he hasn't really done much since retiring apart from slate everybody, As for England Midfield of Walcott, Barry Gerrard. Rooney, Crouch & Defoe up front we're at home against a so called weeker nation. Go for Goals!!!!!

I don't think I've ever read one of Paul Parker's (EX England legend, best defender in the world, font of all footballing knowledge) 'columns' where he's actually said something positive about anyone.

Please let's not forget when he turned his back on the ball in Italy.

I've said it many, many, many times before ... 24 carat @#$%.

  20. But the thing also is despite i doubt personnaly they can play together cause its like having two captains on the same boat, ot 2 cooks in the same kitchen i belive in fabio capello. He is one of the rare managers that can make them work togetehr... and iam looking forward to see. The reality is that u cannot just drop one of them its impossible... cause for the world cup (and capello still has time for experimenst) u cant sit one of them out the games cause they are game changers both. so england would be better off having succeed to make thm play togetehr well than not succeeding. To have a chance to clinch the world cup capello needs to explore and try something that work out so they can both play, then only then england would be truly unstoppable.
