US Open - Serena to get US Open verdict soon

Eurosport - Sat, 10 Oct 07:44:00 2009

Serena Williams is likely to discover whether she will be further punished for her outburst at a line judge at the US Open before the end of the year, according to WTA chief executive Stacey Allaster.

TENNIS Serena Williams left US Open with shame - 3 - 0

The Australian Open and Wimbledon champion was fined $10,000 for the verbal attack on the official during the semi-finals at Flushing Meadow last month.

The 28-year-old, however, still faces possible exclusion from future Grand Slam events after a further review by the Grand Slam Committee, which oversees the four major tournaments in tennis.

"First of all, I'd like to say I think Serena is a fantastic champion and a great person," Allaster said at the China Open.

"She has acknowledged the incident in New York as being a mistake, and something that she's not proud of, and she's apologised for that.

"That is under investigation, it is ongoing ... it would be safe to assume that they will make a decision before year-end.

"I think all of us would love to have it resolved sooner rather than later. It would be in the best interests for the sport and definitely the best interests for Serena."

Williams bowed out of the China Open in the third round this week, but not before assuring that she would return to the number one spot in the rankings next week.

The 11-times Grand Slam singles champion had no altercations with officials and said she had taken on board the lessons from the incident.

"I'm a very passionate player, and I do the best I can in the best manner I can," she said after her defeat to Nadia Petrova.

"Obviously I'd be not smart if I were to do the same thing. It's important for people to learn from things they did in the past, and I learned and I would never do the same thing."

  1. My only regret on the whole issue is that I had Serena apologised to a white man. My God I am shaking.. How on earth can this be. I forgive her out of ignorance and her Christian Believes and Values.. This is black man's dilemma.. They have all the attributes of God. This is the christian value we preach and not white man's value devoid of honesty. Bible in their left hand right hand swift to iniquity. People who worship idols like them sing peoples praises and not God. Their reward is written long time ago. They open their mouth to call god but their heart is far from True GOD.
I have no further expectations for this degradation of tennis by USTA, the chinese lines woman and Clijsters. She has since disappeared and has announced her come back at AO. It was the same Clijsters Serena Played against at Indian Wells in her last appearance in that competition. USTA to be investigated as there is something wrong with America and their handling of Serena. We should not all keep quiet and rejoycing in silence as this is tragedy for tennis. that official can conspire against a player to throw away match. USTA should be investigated..

  2. Hempy, I don't care what you think about me and my words. The word I speak is spirit and it can polute uneducated minds.. If you read the lines you will note the hafeful stannce of injustice.. we should not judge.. The lines woman did no good to anybody except perhaps Clijster who jump to the occasion and the USTA capitalising on it. I know the amount of hatrate we humans habour against one another. If we continue to minister injustice and failed to speak out not mere sentimental outbursts but meaningful opposition to injustices, we are certain to be near God. But since this is human, we are all subject to the final judgment. What that Lady did will deserve execution if it was a national footbal team. In fact she should be banned from any match. If she is a white stourge, then be it, use her against Federa..

  4. AbiodunS that was the annoying thing for me as a fan of kim. being a sentimental so and so i was hoping for a fairytale win by either kim or melanie. by the time they robbed serena to get kim to the final, i was so incensed with the injustice my allegiance shifted to caroline in the final. yes i did feel that a big insult was meted to kim herself, almost like the conspirators thought (in view of what had happened to elena at the wimbledon semis) that kim was not capable of beating serena without the helping hand of some buffoon shouting foot fault at the most critical point in any match and the stupid umpire, unlike how previous umpires diffuse a volatile situation, quickly called out for the tournament referee without even waiting for a complaint from the line judge 'victim'. the flood of bigots who are just celebrating the fact that serena was out couldn't find the humanity to consider the injustice of the daylight robbery. at the end of the day, kim herself was not party to the conspiracy, so she should still be congratulated (and it could not have been easy for her to put the episode to one side and still perform in the final). as the person whose win was tainted by the conspiracy i'll bet she would welcome any judicial challenge that got to the bottom of who was involved in the conspiracy.

  6. Why does the preface IF I COULD not seem to count to the blood baying sucklers on this issue? Commendably this lady (yes a lady for those of you who were not BROUGHT UP to see her as one) has apologised in order to make peace and move on. I personally wouldn't have done in the face of such daylight robbery (no matter what technical nonsense the pretenders like Bobito and Steve Arkwright, wtf is that idiot, try to write from their tainted and heavily prejudiced perspective). of course it doesn't matter to them about what nastase, mcenroe, becker, stich, navratilova, tarrango, sampras, federer, stove have all done in the past, they don't look like serena, period and that is the TRUE ISSUE here. I've got news for you Bobito and Steve Arkwright, america has moved on from the days when you murder innocent people or deprive them of their livelihood in the name of perverted justice. you may hanker for those days to return but us decent people will fight you with all the resources at our disposal, yes decent white people and progressive non-whites, united in confronting your attempts to perpetuate unnatural justice on the innocents of whatever race, colour or creed. As Eel and pjcogs have pointed out before, if you think the line judge and the umpire can just conspire to rob a player at a critical point of the match, with no consequences whatsoever to them, just you wait until this enquiry have finished before you hear the voices of those waiting to see how the authorities deal with the incident.

  7. It is this kind of Top Level Match which TRUE TENNIS FANS LIVE FOR, ARE PREPARED TO WAIT EVEN 5 TO 7 RAIN-DELAYED DAYS , TO WAIT UP AT UNEARTHLY HOURS OF THE DAY (IN SOME PARTS OF THE PLANET) FOR IT TO BEGIN.
MILLIONS OF TRUE TENNIS FANS ALSO WANT A NATURAL CONCLUSION TO SUCH A HUGE MARQUEE MATCH; THE TOP ATTRACTION OF THE TOURNAMENT, AND IT IS A HUGE LETDOWN FOR TENNIS THAT POORLY EXERCISED DISCRETION BY A LINE JUDGE (AS PROVEN BY TV REPLAYS) WHERE SUCH GOOD DISCRETION IS DEMANDED(NOT JUST EXPECTED) IN SUCH A MARQUEE MATCH AT SUCH A CRITICAL LEVEL AS A SEMIFINAL OF A GRANDSLAM, HAVE TOTALLY MARRED AN OTHERWISE GRAND MATCH AND ROBBED IT OF ITS NATURAL CONCLUSION. And this is what makes TRUE (as opposed to psychopathic haters) Tennis Fans absolutely livid that their days of waiting (excruciating even for some ) and anticipation so eager it was threatening to burst out of the seams and spill over onto the carpet that it had been brought to such a rude unfitting incommensurate end by some silly line call caused by poor discretion. If top tennis stars have the same kind of comparatively low pressure lives of lines judges, they would never be top tennis stars in the 1st place, and if line judges have the world class quality and top talent to be top tennis (since nobody's stopping them) they wouldnt have been or remained just line judges. AND even here, there is a HUGE difference between a line judge who INTELLIGENTLY uses her discretion and ONE who behaves like a average-class robot. TOP LEVEL TENNIS DO NOT NEED THE AVERAGE CLASS ROBOTS.

  8. The second set was dominated by repeated breaks of serve; it was a riveting match of titans, of 2 top stars, the kind of matches which make tennis a worthwhile sport to watch, worth the 2-3 hours put aside for tennis in a world where all kinds of activity are competing for one's time and $. Just when it was getting even more exciting, TV replays showed the call couldnt have been more silly and come at a more inopportune time given that discretion is expected before such a call is made. This extremely silly call (as evidenced by TV replays) mar the match from a natural conclusion. It ruined the day for Millions of TRUE TENNIS FANS (rather than psychopathic haters with their vendettas et al) prepared to wait as many days as it requires for the rain to stop and for the marquee match OF THE TOURNAMENT to begin. Millions of TRUE TENNIS FANS do not wait to see a lineswoman using her discretion poorly to make a silly line call (as proven by TV replays) AT THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT. It is NOT NICE to have a match by the 2 TOP ATTRACTIONS ended this way by a silly line call which if good discretion had been exercised would have been totally unnecessary. MILLIONS TRUE TENNIS FANS WANT TO SEE TOP TENNIS STARS BATTLE IT OUT AND THEY EXPECT THE UTMOST DISCRETION POSSIBLE FROM LINE JUDGES EVEN MORE SO IN CALLS WHERE IT IS UNJUSTLY NOT CHALLENGEABLE BY HAWKSEYE OR OTHERWISE IN THE MOMENT. All jobs carry an accountability to exercise the discretion right and TV replays showed this discretion was way out

From justlovetennis, on Sun 11 Oct 9:48AM
  9. We all have jobs at one time or another. But we are also expected to do the job right, rather than just do the job. The simple reality is liability & accountability is attached to not doing the job right as well. TV replays showed the footfault call was either inconclusive or worse, wrong. So did Serena commit a BLATANT footfault at the most critical point of the match? The TV replay showed CLEARLY NO.
IS Serena a repeat Offendor? NO
Did Serena really intend to shove the ball down? CLEARLY NO from her preface of IF I COULD.
Is Serena's oncourt demeanor (in her entire career history) prior to this silly line call , a good one? Its more than good, baby, its near-impeccable!
Is Serena a Jeff Tarango? You must be joking, blatantly dishonest or worse completely moronic. Tarango has a notorious repute of unruly abusive behaviour on court throughout his career, and his wife even physically assaulted the umpire. Tarango is a serial repeat offendor. Serena is a spur of the moment first time lose-it-er.
Was the line call silly, considering that discretion was expected? YES, and this is further supported by the TV replay.
Millions of TRUE TENNIS FANS around the world have eagerly waited 3 DAYS!! for this rain delayed match to commence and it did not disappoint. The score of 6-4, 7-5 showed the match was close, but it was closer than that. The second set was dominated by repeated breaks of serve; it was a riveting match of titans, of 2 top stars, the kind of matches which make tennis a worthwhile sport to watch, worth the 2-3 hours put aside for tennis in a world where all kinds of activity are competing for one's time and $. 10. As we have already seen and heard, there are many Serena haters who will resort to anything to magnify a 100 times the severity of her mere verbal abuse. We have also as someone had pointed out how some writers (of all the gall to even dare to call themselves tennis writers) have deliberately twisted the scenario 360 % around by either making nonsensical or twisted comparisons or worse by deliberately removing THE MOST IMPORTANT part of Serena's tirade, the most relevant preface of " IF I COULD..." Unless judge and jury are also sharing the same vendetta ideas or just plain incompetent, they will surely acknowledge that that tirade preface of "IF I COULD" is the CLEAREST EVIDENCE that Serena had intended it as no more than a tirade. As someone pointed out, it is no more different than a irritable pressurised Mother brandishing her steaming hot ladle (becos she happened to be cooking when she finally snapped at the her child's annoying antic) as she screamed " IF I COULD..I WOULD THROTTLE YOU RIGHT THIS MOMENT!" And the child would have been zero danger of being snuffed out unless Marilyn Monroe is being mistaken for a man.
Others have pointed out that there are rules and the lines woman was just doing her job. But these same others also conveniently ignore the fact that all jobs and rules require the use of discretion, the consideration of the circumstances which also includes career history, impeccability of on-court demeanor prior, intent & ultimate outcome, is the person a repeat offendor?, et al. First time offendors are ALWAYS invariably given a chance unless you are talking about murder or grand crimes. We all have jobs at one time or another. But we are also expected to do the job right, rather than just do the job. The simple reality is liability & accountability is attached to not doing the job right as well. 11. According to some on here, Serena's threats of violence can be excused because a line judge may have got a call wrong? Oh really?

From Peter, on Sun 11 Oct 7:53AM
  12. Bobito, you are wrong. The line judge could have made a mistake. Are you telling us that line calls are 100% correct? Then why did they bring in challenges? For me, the question I have for the organisers is this: how come they do not allow challenges for foot faults?

From kmf, on Sun 11 Oct 7:39AM
  13. by the way, FYI, you fans from across The Pond. The Serena episode was shown and re-shown from every possible angle. The tennis world and coverage is far vaster than Eurosport... There is no doubt about the error by the linesperson. Again, I do not defend Serena's reaction, but, indeed, I understand why she exploded....

    From pk161976, on Sun 11 Oct 5:42AM
  14. #39. Yes, "we all heard' Serena's come back to what "we all saw" was a bloiody error in a line call that my cat wouldn't have made. ..Have you ever thought of what passion and emotion a great tennis player must have to become a Federer, a Nadal, a Marat Safin (in his prime) or a Serena? ...I would stake my life that any of those other names I have mentioned caught in the exact circumstances in which Serena was caught could have stifled an outburst of similar dimensions. She was wrong to threaten the poor, ignorant linesperson ...but she was also very HUMAN in doing so...She has been punsihed enough. Has the linesperson been sanctioned for her gross error? has her pay been docked? has she been suspended for falling down abismallty on her job? Why have we heard nothing of this graceless person? has SHE apologized to Serena?

    From pk161976, on Sun 11 Oct 4:59AM
  15. So, tomorrow I go robbing a bank and if i get caught i will appologise expecting to be forgiven. Right?? Of course not. What Serena did deserves an appropriate punishment, just like a red card in football. The appology might help slightly reduce the ban but it should never be the basis of a suspension or absence of ban. And as some have highlighted, McEnroe was bad mouthed, and he got done for it properly. Serena was intimidating and threatening. Such behaviour would have been enough to get arrested by cops..

From Half A Brain, on Sun 11 Oct 1:40AM
  16. These people have really aroused a beast they cannot tame. After all the commotion and turmoil arising from this unfortunate incident,Serena couldn't hold a news conference without being thrown a barrage of questions on the same issue She has apologised, explained and apologised and explained her regret again and again.what do you want her to do?.
I agree with 27,28,29.Leave Serena alone W people. She's been punished more thatn enough for crying foul against injustice.I don't remember any girl on the tour that has endured the injustice these two girls have had to go through over the years in this sport.Yet they opened not their mouth. What's really going on here?I think these girls are victims of some sort of conspiracy.
By opening up doors for further punishment and not meting it out sooner, there is room created for further rancour.
As for the Eastern Europeans, they should go tend to their goats and sheep in their mountains. This is not a forum for them to come show their incivility. Why don't eurosport ban such primitive people from spewing out vulgarity where men of schooled minds are?

From Eel, on Sun 11 Oct 12:23AM
  17. For all those that want to compare Serena's behaviour to that of John McEnroes need to wake up. Whilst McEnroe was indeed sometimes abusive to officials, he never threatenned them with violence. Serena did, and we all heard it. Its for that reason alone that Serena Williams needs to be suspended from the tour to reflect on her behaviour. She has let herself down, her fans down and more importantly, Womens tennis. Her behaviour was nothing short of disgraceful and as a role model for thousands of young kids, for their sake she needs to be seen punished. How many more young children do we want to see grow up and behave that way just because "Serena did it".

From Peter, on Sat 10 Oct 11:55PM
