Premier League - Goal of the Week: Berbatov magic

Eurosport - Fri, 09 Oct 18:02:00 2009

Dimitar Berbatov has class aplenty and his stunning goal in Manchester United's draw with Sunderland has been voted goal of the week by Eurosport-Yahoo! readers.

2009-2010 Manchester United-Sunderland Dimitar Berbatov - 0

The Bulgarian forward still divides opinion among the Old Trafford faithful, but there is no doubt they were toasting him at the weekend following his simply sublime overhead kick from 12 yards which got United back on level terms. The goal earned Berbatov an impressive 7,599 votes.

Thomas Vermaelen came over to Arsenal billed as a no-nonsense defender, well he is fast forging a reputation as a goalscorer and his 25-yard piledriver against Blackburn earned him 5,003 votes and second place.

Arsenal star Theo Walcott showed no signs of ring-rust as he climbed off the bench for his first appearance of the season and his goal from Cesc Fabregas's precise pass earned him third place.

Darren Bent fired Sunderland into a shock lead at Old Trafford and his powerful drive impressed 1,104 of our readers.

Andre Bikey is another defender to feature and he showed the instincts of a striker, exchanging passes with David Nugent before slotting home, but he only managed to secure two per cent of the vote.

Leon Osman's superb curler for Everton against Stoke earned him 484 votes, while Sebastian Larsson's free-kick for Birmingham against Burnley only secured 233 votes.

Goal of the Week result:

1. Dimitar Berbatov (Man Utd v Sunderland) - 7,599 votes

2. Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal v Blackburn) - 5,003 votes

3. Theo Walcott (Arsenal v Blackburn) - 1,367 votes

5. Leon Osman (Everton v Stoke) - 484 votes

6. Andre Bikey (Burnley v Birmingham) - 330 votes

  8. Let's just say, you (reader) are a wall and Berbatov and Torres are missile.

When you're blocking Berbatov, you succeed.. but the splint will damage you more.. but when you block Torres.. you're still fantastic!

Berbatov is better than Torres.. Berbatov can still go forward even three defenders are blocking him but Torres?? HAHAHA!!

  9. i agree with sara,..arsenal can win when the opposition is a weaker little team,..the goal is a beauty in the 1st division standard,..but not in the premier league,..i really wish arsenal good luck when they go agaisnt loserpo-=ol n chelsh-it,..coz they cant ever win when they face stronger opposition like barca and man u,..even van persie and farregas taking turn faking their injury when they goes agaisnt man u n barca,.. but when its loserpo-ol or chelsh-,it everybody is fit and wanna play,..

It was the only Man U goal that they was scored on the weekend. Arsenal on the other hand scored 6 absolute beauties, obviously the Man U one would end up winning as opinion would be divided amongst the Arsenal fans.

  20. esther.melvyn, it was not a stunt. He was aiming for it from a position and a distance such kicks usually don't come to the mind. He dared and trusted his talent and it worked. Great goal. Vermaelen's kick is exactly that, just another distance kick. Nothing special about it. Walcott's goal was much better.
