World Cup - Play-offs for Ireland after late drama

Eurosport - Sat, 10 Oct 19:45:00 2009

A last minute goal from Alberto Gilardino earned Italy a 2-2 draw against the Republic of Ireland and booked their place in the World Cup as Group 8 winners.

Italy's Alberto Gilardino (2nd L) celebrates his goal against Ireland during their 2010 World Cup qualifying match at Croke Park Stadium in Dublin - 0

Ireland looked to have snatched a dramatic winner three minutes from time when Sean St Ledger scored with a diving header, which would have taken things to Wednesday's final round of games, but Gilardino had other ideas as he sent the holders through to South Africa and consigned Ireland to the play-offs.

Glenn Whelan had put Ireland in front with a stunning strike in the eighth minute, only for a Mauro Camoranesi header to level matters in the 26th minute.

The result means that Wednesday's fixtures are immaterial with Italy hosting Cyprus in Parma, while Ireland take on Montenegro at Croke Park.

The manner of the draw will hurt the Irish but in reality a point was the most they deserved as Italy won the possession battle for long periods of the game.

However, Giovanni Trapattoni must have been dreaming of getting one over on his countrymen after eight minutes when Whelan curled home a stunning strike from distance into the top corner after Liam Lawrence had picked him out with a knock back from a free-kick as the Italian defence waited for a cross.

Italy responded well to the goal and were already on top of things in the minutes before Camoranesi broke free to head home a corner from Andrea Pirlo.

There were few chances after that until the late drama but Italy always looked that little bit more comfortable on the ball. However, a conservative game-plan from Marcello Lippi's side meant that Shay Given had little to do.

The Italians did have the ball in the net, though, just after half-time when Vincenzo Iaquinta bundled in Giorgio Chiellini's flick on but he was just offside. If Iaquinta had not touched the ball it might have actually flown directly in for a valid goal.

Gianluca Zambrotta also forced Given into a smart save at his near post in the 71st minute but the game then looked all set to finish 1-1.

That was until Trapattoni decided to gamble and allow St Ledger to go up for a free-kick for the first time in the match with just four minutes remaining.

Substitute Stephen Hunt chipped in a great ball and St Ledger found space at the back post before diving low to head home from close range.

Croke Park erupted and the fans were ready to celebrate a famous win but the Irish lost their heads in the final moments and an ill-advised attack gave Italy sufficient space to launch a counter attack.

Salvatore Boccetti stormed forward down the left and his ball to Iaquinta was passed over to substitute Gilardino who guided a low effort home as St Ledger allowed him too much space in the box.

Italy can now prepare for life in South Africa but Ireland, who will be unseeded for the play-offs, must come through a massive two-leg test in November if they are to join them there next summer.

Cyprus ended Bulgaria's hopes of second place with a 4-1 win in Larnaca.

Konstantinos Charalampidis of local champions APOEL Nicosia opened the scoring in the 11th minute after taking a cross from the left from Efstathios Aloneftis. He scored again in the 20th minute from the edge of the box.

Bulgaria struck back on the stroke of half-time when Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov scored after taking a cross from the right from Blagoy Georgiev.

Georgiev missed two other chances, in the eighth and 53rd minutes, hitting the post on both occasions.

Michael Konstantinou took advantage of a mistake by Ivan Ivanov to increase the hosts' lead in the 58th minute with a volley from close range. Aloneftis finished off the game with a goal from a through ball by Charalampidis in the 78th.

  1. Post 25. You are a legend ive been thinking the same thing for years but could never put it into words as good as yours. As for the match I thought we did well considering it was the World Cup holders, we looked good in patches even Mcgeady played well (though his end product is still a bit on the Aaron Lennon side) are defence seems a bit weak and we def. need a Roy Keane type in midfield, all in all im happy we are in the play-offs but feel like FIFA are fecking things up with this seeding @#$%, what ever happend to the luck of the draw.

Ow and somebody needs to give Stephen Ireland a kick in the arse that guy need his head sorted, I would do anything to play for my country

  2. Andy Reid is on fire at the moment for Sunderland, There is no way he should be left out of this play off, Reid with Steven Ireland in the middle of the park should be a good basis for the midfield. Trappitoni should he horse wipped if he does not bring Reidy into the squad

  8. I must say that personally, i am not overly impressed or happy with National teams being managed by Foreign Managers. However, playing devils advocate here, the smaller footballing nations are already disadvantaged by the fact that they have limited player resources so further hampering their chances by restricting the type of people they can employ as Managers would not really be helping them at all.
Also seeing someone in the England team with the name Pietersen, or Hussain (cricket) seems really strange. Not that they shouldn't be there but they're not "English" (traditional) names are they - no racism intended.

  9. 20 - I'm an Englishman, with distant Irish Ancestry (haven't we all though [lol]) and was really glad to see the result was not all doom and gloom. Hopefully the play offs will be kind to the Irish and it will be England and you in the Final in South Africa. (Maybe not but who says were not allowed to dream!)

Well done boys and keep up the fighting spirit.

FIFA should change the rule such that managers can only manage their OWN national team - if managers are not important to the COMPETITION, why are foreign managers employed?!

  12. Well said Cormac (26). I also think that a lot of Ireland's best sporting talent is tied up in Gaelic football and hurling. Not that they should be playing football but if these Irish games didn't exist (I'm glad they do) ROI would have a much bigger pool of talent to choose from.

I was at the game and thought it was a fair result in the end although I was gutted when Italy scored the equaliser. Italy weren't that great but were better than Ireland in midfield, at least in the second half. Pirlo had a shaky start but his class started to show as the game went on. It's such a pity Stephen Ireland won't play for the team as he would make a big difference with his creativity and passing. I think ROI did well against a huge footballing nation where almost everyone plays football from a very young age. We played them twice and were close to beating them on both occasions. Hopefully we can raise our game again for the play-offs. I agree with Shay Given about the seeding for the play offs, it's very unfair on the smaller nations that the rules have been changed at the last minute just because some of the bigger teams aren't good enough to qualify automatically. I know it's good to have the best teams competing in the World Cup but changing the rules at the end of the qualification stage, because some of the bigger teams are not good enough, is just not fair. Good luck to the lads next month.

  18. I think you English people need to look at history. Ireland in 1840 had a higher population than it does now. Because of your colonial aggression Ireland was kept poor, and, as a result, generations of people left the country. Now we want some of our people back, and you have a problem with that. That's a fuking joke...If it wasn't for your oppression the England team wouldn't have Rooney, Gerrard, Ferdinand and many others with Irish heritage, who should be playing for Ireland. Typical English, no idea of your own history.

    19. Everyone knows Ireland haven't enough players of their own to field a decent side. I hadn't realised it was that bad until wobbles reeled off all those Englishmen. One or two foreigners are allowed but you lot are just taking the p&ss. You see, when i listen to Mick Mcarthy (Yorkshireman) and Jason Macateer (scouser) i don't see Irishmen. No i see and hear two Englishmen who wern't good enough to play for England. It's too much of a coincidence that there are so many English sounding Rep Of Ireland players. You don't see any Irish sounding England players do you, or a welsh sounding scotland players? You lot are taking the proverbials. It might be legal by FIFA rules but that's hardly the point.
