Ambrose, 24, was left out of the Addicks squad for Saturday's 2-2 draw at Plymouth Argyle in the Championship in anticipation of his move back to Portman Road.

The deal was confirmed on Monday and former England Under-21 international Ambrose could make his second debut for Town in the televised clash at Doncaster on Saturday evening.

Ipswich manager Jim Magilton told the club's official website: "I have played with Darren and know what qualities he has, and we are delighted to have added him to the squad."

Charlton boss Alan Pardew confirmed after the weekend game that Ambrose was set to leave The Valley and return to the club where he began his professional career in 2001.

Pardew said: "Someone had to be sacrificed to give us the financial room to bring one or two in, and Darren was the option I've taken."

Ambrose, who is fully fit after recent struggles with hip and groin injuries, left Ipswich for Newcastle in a £1million deal in 2003 before moving to Charlton two years later for £1.5million.

  1. I think taking him on loan make sense then. Test him out before making it permanet.

  2. The reason Ipswich have a better chance of promotion that Charlton is that they DON'T have players like Ambrose in their squad. Sorry Ipswich, but you've signed a wrong-un; a real fair-weather player.
Charlton fans should be pleased to see the back of him. Watch the addicks climb the table now!
