Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended for three games for a rough hit on Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn.

Kostopoulos slammed Van Ryn from behind during the first period of Saturday's 6-3 win.

"While it is my determination that Kostopoulos did not deliver a check to an unsuspecting opponent, his actions caused injuries," NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said.

Van Ryn will be sidelined for up to six weeks after breaking a finger on his left hand and being concussed.

The 29-year-old defenseman will also require dental surgery.

Kostopoulos, who will forfeit around $33,000 (£21,000) in salary, will be eligible to return on November 16 when the Canadiens visit the St Louis Blues.
