Premier League - Bent double sinks City

Eurosport - Mon, 10 Nov 07:50:00 2008

Three men saw red as a Darren Bent brace in Tottenham's 2-1 win at Manchester City saw his side move off the foot of the Premier League table.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Tottenham Darren Bent - 0

The visitors found themselves trailing after a quarter of an hour but a Spurs win looked inevitable when Gelson Fernandes was dismissed in the 26th minute.

After the opening exchanges, where the game ebbed and flowed without either side creating a genuine scoring opportunity, Robinho opened the hosts account with a move he started and finished.

The Brazilian was on hand to emphatically fire home a parried Darius Vassell shot from close range. The former Real Madrid player started the move deep on the left wing before finding Stephen Ireland on the edge of the box. Ireland then slid the ball through to Vassell. Heurelho Gomes saved well but Robinho was their to score his sixth in as many games.

Spurs looked to hit back with a succession of free-kicks and corners but their big break came in the when Fernandes committed a second bookable offence. Fernandes can have no complaints after hacking both Luka Modric and then David Bentley down from behind in just a matter of minutes.

The equaliser was not long in coming and when provided with his first real opportunity of the game Bent made no mistake to drill home from just outside the box.

The former Charlton man capitalised on a mistake by City skipper Richard Dunne and outfoxed both the Irishman and his centre back partner Micah Richards before sending his powerful shot squirming under Hart.

It looked as though the visitors would extend their lead and Mark Hughes's men were perhaps fortunate to go into the changing rooms at half-time on level terms.

Despite trailing by a man it was the home side that looked more likely to score for large periods of the second half.

It was somewhat against the run of play that the North London outfit took the lead after Bent was on target again with his eighth goal in seven games. Bent reacted to a fine Jenas pass, moved the ball inside the box and fired low past hart into the bottom left of the net.

It looked all over but City continued to press and the Redknapp will have much criticised keeper Gomes to thank for keeping his side's noses in front.

The game was however effectively ended as a contest when last defender Dunne hauled down Bent just outside the box.

Spurs themselves had a man sent off when Benoit Assou-Ekoto picked up his second yellow late on but it was irrelevant and Redknapp perhaps won't mind as his rejuvenated Spurs side begin their march up the table.

  8. Rednapp is a great motivator of players, something Spurs hav'nt had since Venables.
He must make sure they keep on working as hard as they hav been in the last couple of weeks. Players like Jenas need kicking up the butt every week to get the best out of them!!

  14. Love 'em or hate 'em, Spurs form of late is fantastic under Redknapp - expect much more of the same after the January transfer window. I bet Defoe makes a welcome return to the Lane. If you think about it Harry could be Spurs' most successful manager since Bill Nicholson - the turn around at THFC is nothing short of miraculous. I know you're gonna disagree, but let's just watch, shall we?
