Premier League - FA to look at Kinnear rant

Eurosport - Mon, 10 Nov 16:50:00 2008

The FA are to review the comments Joe Kinnear made after Newcastle's 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Sunday.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Newcastle United Joe Kinnear - 0

Kinnear branded official Martin Atkinson a "Mickey Mouse referee" for failing to spot a foul by Fulham's Andy Johnson on Claudio Cacapa in the build-up to the decisive penalty at Craven Cottage.

The interim Newcastle manager may be asked to explain his outburst, with a decision on whether the FA intend to pursue the matter likely on Tuesday.

Kinnear accused Atkinson of costing his side at least a point, as part of a wider rant about the declining standards of refereeing.

"There was a blatant foul prior to the penalty, which the referee ignored," he said.

"We were camped in their half. Cacapa was on the ball - and Johnson completely pushes him out the way, nicks the ball and gets the penalty.

"We've got the Mickey Mouse referee doing nothing. He's made an error that cost us. That's the standard of refereeing in this country.

"It happens week in, week out. There's always a smart answer like 'someone was obstructing my view'.

"You used to be able to have a bit of banter with referees, and they'd put their hands up if they make mistakes. Now they hide."

It is not Kinnear's first spat with an official - he was given a two-match touchline ban in 2004 for calling referee Clive Penton 'Coco the Clown' while at Nottingham Forest.

The suspension meant he was unable to sit in the dug-out for Newcastle until mid-October, and there could be a similar conclusion to this latest incident.

Kinnear was incensed by the defeat, after claiming his side could have won given their dominance until Danny Murphy snatched all three points from the spot.

Shola Ameobi equalised in the second half, but Fulham restored their lead against the run of play to plunge Newcastle back into the relegation zone.

  1. the laugh is if it was the other way and newcastle got the penalty nothing would have been said . why dont managers stop wining about decisions against them when they say nothing when it goes for them ,, maybe the managers are the mickey mouses ,football is a great game and errors happen and thats life , shall we stop the game all the time check the replay and while that is on have some adverts chucked in as what they do in america cos thats what tv wants ? cos they can make money in adverts in the game , the great game of football will be ruined , so you mickey mouse managers stop moaning when it goes against you ,its life get on with it ,

  2. Good refereeing results in good football being played; good refereeing results managers not making excuses about poor refereeing that affected the outcome of games and not calling referees "Mickey Mouse". Good refereeing results in RESPECT. FA, UEFA, and FIFA. You need to change an antiquated system and allow more referees and technology to help referees.

  7. Managers like Kinnear should look at themselves before berating officials. If the ref. is Mickey Mouse then perhaps Joe is Goofy.
Foul mouth managers who employ and condone people like Barton are perhaps not good enough to judge others so harshly.

  8. The FA want everyone to be nice to the ref. true with out them there wouldn't be a match, but there has to be some kind of punishment for a poor ref. if a person has a bad day fine everyone does, and sometimes they really are obstructed. The FA needs to raise its standards this isn't some grass roots league.

  9. Donald Duck would be more appropriate from Joe. Leave him alone for a bit please, he is having a go with instuctions only from far away in the smoke. The Toon will make it OK

Agree with the boys about the video playback and also bring in the rugby style sin bin to shut up the mouthing.

  10. Dat4kay, I agree with your 4th eye suggestion especially with the top flight of English football being a serious mult million pound industry but there's no way any footballer who played at some profesional level could be a referee purely for the reason that thier impartiality couldn't be garaunteed. Referees always whinge about wanting respect but maybe if they weren't (for the large part) incompetent waste of spaces, they'd be given some

  11. footballers going onto be ref's, dont make me laugh.
    The ref's dont earn enough.
somebody will say next that they only play for the love of the game.

Quite agree with the IT, its been proven in Rugby and wouldnt hold up the game more than the players harrassment off the ref's.

The managers are right though, its a case of jobs, promotion or demotion. The ref's are making millon pound decisions out on the pitch

  12. Football is now a multi million pound industry. It's time a fourth eye with IT technology is used.
Managers are very good at spotting incidents in their favour but how often do they conveniently not see any incidents against them. That always amuses me. Even with replays how often to we argue whether or not it was a free kick or a penalty even with replays.
There is a question that footballers should go on to be ref. How many go on to do that after seeing the abuse the Ref takes? The lack of footballers going on to be ref should answer the question.

  17. Why is it that when managers tell it as it is they are punished and the stupid refs are always right even when they are soooo wrong.
All the FA want is to have @#$% footing managers and players with no backbone well sod them bring back the vinny jones and chopper harris's and get back to proper football.
