A weekly look at the domestic fortunes of the British clubs' Champions League adversaries.
GROUP A - Marseille (who play Liverpool)
Olympique Marseille prepared for their Champions League Group A decider with a 2-0 home win over Monaco. Defender Julien Rodriguez opened the scoring with a header on 52 minutes after a volley by fellow midfielder Benoit Cheyrou bounced off the crossbar. Midfielder and captain Lorik Cana wrapped it up when he headed home from a corner with 20 minutes remaining. Marseille, recovering from a dismal start, climbed three places up to 13th in the 20-strong table.
Bursaspor 0-1 Besiktas
Chaves (II-A) 0-2 Porto (Portuguese Cup fourth round)
---
GROUP B - Valencia (who play Chelsea)
Another laboured performance from Valencia as they played out a goalless draw away to Osasuna. The hosts had the better of the game, Czech striker Jaroslav Plasil shaving the post with a left-foot drive in the first half and having a deflected shot cleared off the line in the second. Ronald Koeman's side have won just two of their last seven matches and have not found the net in the last three.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 Schalke 04
Rosenborg - no game, Norway currently in close-season
---
GROUP E - Lyon (who play Rangers)
Olympique Lyon warmed up for their decisive Champions League Group E tie in poor fashion by losing 1-0 at modest Caen. Forward Yoan Gouffran hit the winner for promoted Caen when he raced into the box to beat Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre on 18 minutes. Lyon, who looked sluggish in the first half and clumsy in the second, have to win in Glasgow on Wednesday to make the last 16 of the Champions League while Rangers only need a draw to advance.
Barcelona 2-1 Deportivo La Coruņa
VfB Stuttgart 3-1 VfL Wolfsburg
---
GROUP F - Roma (who play Manchester United)
Roma were held 1-1 at Livorno despite Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi rising above the home defence to head his side in front in the fifth minute. Spanish forward Diego Tristan danced down the right and fired in the equaliser just a minute later. Roma's Brazilian defender Juan headed onto the crossbar in the 61st and De Rossi thought he had scored with another header in the 78th, but the referee blew up for a foul that was hard to spot on television replays.
Dynamo Kiev - no game, Ukraine currently in close-season
Sporting Lisbon 4-0 Louletano (II-A) (Portuguese Cup fourth round)
---
GROUP H - Steaua Bucharest (who play Arsenal)
Champions Steaua Bucharest won 1-0 at Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt. Valentin Badea scored the 19th minute winner - lashing home a low 20-yard drive that went through a crowd of players. CFR Cluj beat Otelul Galatio 3-1 to stay firmly in the driving seat 11 points ahead of fourth-placed Steaua.
SK Kladno 0-1 Slavia Prague
Sevilla 3-1 Real Murcia
