Currently ranked 263 in the world, Verkerk has struggled with injury and glandular fever in recent years and has failed to regain his form since returning to the Tour in 2006.

"I do not think that I can return to the highest level," the 30-year-old told a Dutch TV station.

"It had been my plan to play more matches. It's a pity it didn't work out."

Verkerk enjoyed a dream run to the final of Roland Garros in 2003 when he was ranked 46th in the world, and beat clay-court specialists Carlos Moya and Guillermo Coria along the way.

He was beaten in straight sets in the final by Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero but jumped up the world rankings shortly after to a career-high 14.

The Dutchman won two ATP titles, in Milan in 2003 and a year later in Amersfoort.
