Worthington Pledge To Northern Ireland

Fri 11 Jan, 10:09 PM

Nigel Worthington insists Northern Ireland can expect "commitment in abundance" as he inches closer to signing a new two-year deal with the Irish Football Association.

The former Norwich boss is thought to have agreed terms on a deal which would make him the most highly-paid manager in Northern Irish history and he believes he can provide value for money.

Worthington took over from Lawrie Sanchez last June and, although the side eventually failed to qualify for the European Championships, he insists there are plenty of reasons to look ahead with optimism.

"The contract is being drawn up and hopefully it will be sealed next week," he told BBC Sport.

"I'm delighted - with some good results and a little bit of luck I may even extend my stay.

"The money is not a factor and I'm still a long way behind Fabio Capello with England.

"What I've asked for is a fair day's pay for a fair day's work and the IFA know they are going to get commitment in abundance."

Worthington, 46, also revealed that his employers had taken the opportunity to guard against another sudden departure after Sanchez resigned his post to take over at Fulham last season - a position he no longer holds.

"There have been clauses mentioned, more from the IFA point of view, which I can understand.

"They want to cover their back after the last scenario (with Sanchez) which I understand.

"So there's a situation in there, for whatever reason, but I don't see any reason why I should be leaving prior to that two years."
