Scunthorpe United chairman Steve Wharton has asssured fans that there is the money available if the right players are found.

The Championship strugglers face a relegation battle and both the Wharton and boss Nigel Adkins have been criticised for their lack movement in the transfer market.

But Wharton insists Adkins will only bring in players who will improve the squad.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "What is most important - spending money or bringing in the right players?

"Nigel has been working his socks off to try and bring players in to assemble the best team he can.

"The difficulty he has is to find and attract the quality we need to improve the side.

"I would rather the fans accuse me of being Scrooge rather than put pressure on Nigel Adkins, who is still a young manager, to spend money on players he might not be sure about."
