Fig rolls Spurs over with late header

Sun 11 Jan, 04:00 PM

Jermain Defoe made his second debut for Tottenham but was upstaged by Maynor Figueroa, whose late header earned Wigan a 1-0 win on Sunday.Defoe started up front alongside Roman Pavlyuchenko in front of the watching Fabio Capello - but barely got a sniff on a quiet afternoon for Chris Kirkland.

And it was Figueroa who grabbed the headlines in stoppage time, when he powered home a header from a right-wing corner to collect his first goal for Latics and all three points for Steve Bruce's troops, who have now won five games on the trot on home soil.

Wigan keeper Kirkland made a few routine stops early on to deny Ledley King and Michael Dawson headers - but he was a watching spectator for the rest of the game as Harry Redknapp looked to pocket a point.

The first half was a forgettable affair, and the game only really sparked into life in the last 10 minutes when the hosts decided to go for the throat.

Ryan Taylor steered a free-kick over the crossbar before Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey failed to test the injured Heurelho Gomes with clear headed efforts.

Spurs were camped in their own half and paid the price in the dying minutes, when Figueroa headed home to send the JJB fans into a frenzy.

The result kept Spurs in the relegation zone, while Wigan remain seventh having banked 18 points from the last 21 on offer in the Premier League.
