Simon Davey revealed he is on the lookout for a new striker after seeing Barnsley miss a host of opportunities in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton. The Tykes, who could not agree terms with Chesterfield striker Jamie Ward during the week, were sunk by a David McGoldrick header 14 minutes from time.
Jamie Cureton, Jon Macken and Maceo Rigters had all earlier missed chances to put the hosts ahead, and Davey is keen to strengthen his attacking options.
He said: "I have got a few irons in the fire and hopefully we will have a face in the building by Wednesday. I need to get one striker in, possibly two.
"We have to react what happens on the pitch, so we will see what happens in the week."
The Barnsley boss found the defeat hard to take after creating so many chances.
"We have had endless amounts of chances and possession but we couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. When we did breach them, their goalkeeper made saves," he said.
"Teams will always get one chance and they took it, unfortunately we had 10 chances and did not take any."
Barnsley pushed for an equaliser after McGoldrick's strike and had appeals for a penalty turned down when Kayode Odejayi appeared to be pulled down.
Davey insisted referee Tony Bates was wrong not to point to the spot.
He said: "It was a penalty, we don't seem to be getting them. I don't know what it is but it was a penalty, everybody in the stadium could see that."
Southampton move level on points with 21st-placed Norwich after the smash-and-grab victory and stay in the relegation zone on goal difference only, but boss Jan Poortvliet admitted his side may not have deserved the win.
He said: "If it is deserved I don't know... the win is the most important thing. We got the goal at the right moment, with only 14 minutes left to play.
"I am satisfied by the result, I think the boys worked hard. They looked like a team today, it's important to get the first win of the year."
The Dutchman saw his side rely heavily on goalkeeper Kelvin Davis, with the Saints stopper making a string of fine saves to deny Jamie Cureton twice and Stephen Foster, and Poortvliet admitted it is what he has come to expect from Davis.
He said: "The goalkeeper has been good all year. He is there to make saves and he was outstanding. You know he is there and he will save you a couple of times."
