Andy Murray continued his brilliant start to 2009 by retaining his ATP Doha title in Qatar with an impressive 6-4 6-2 victory over Andy Roddick.
The British third seed outplayed Roddick in all areas to record his sixth victory over the big-serving American.
There were fears before the match from the Murray camp that he might pull out and save himself for the Australian Open after tweaking his back during the semi-final win over Roger Federer, but he showed no signs of discomfort during an emphatic victory.
It has been an excellent start to the season for the world number four and this tournament win was Murray's ninth ATP tour title.
Most encouraging for Murray, however, will be the two victories over Federer, the most recent coming in the 6-7 6-2 6-2 Doha semi-final win, and the victory over Rafa Nadal which came in last week's World Tennis Championship.
Murray will now head to the Australian Open later this month looking to capitalise on his brilliant run of form in his pursuit of a first Grand Slam victory.
Both players started the first set with comfortable service holds before Murray started to impose himself in the fifth game. A brilliant cross-court forehand helped set up three break points and he broke Roddick at the first time of asking.
From then on it went with serve as Murray comfortably wrapped up the set 6-4, losing only five points on his serve throughout.
Roddick looked to be troubling the Murray serve in the second game of the second set, after a double fault from Murray gave Roddick a 0-30 lead. However, the Scot promptly produced some sublime groundstrokes to take the set to 1-1 before again breaking Roddick after going 15-40 up in the next game.
Murray was in imperious form and hitting winners from all angles. He again broke Roddick to make it 4-1, and comfortably served out the rest of the set.
Roddick got his only break point in the final game, but a Murray ace took the game to deuce for the first time before a backhand winner sealed the match.

i agree with u and i saw the match.u r right nadal is very good on clay court but for federer we can not write him off on clay court ,because he reached 3 times finals.i hope he will win this year.
Andy Murray is efficient but bases his game on defense like Hewitt back in the old time. When his physic is not 100 % or when he's tired after a long match, he becomes very vulnurable(cf The US open Final)
suman123 r. You obviously didn't see Nadal destroy him at Roland Garros last year. I'd put him as 2nd favourite on clay. NEVER favourite.
post 113.hai carlos i agree with u.federer is the best forever.we can not compare anyone to him.he is alltime favourite for granslams on any surface.
that is the third time andy murray has retained a title after San jose 2006/2007 ans st petersburg 2007/2008
i reckon murray can now go on and dominate the sport for many years to come,at the moment no-one can touch him
Austin, fair enough,Federer said that, but he is not going to say he is the greatest,to be honest. He along with all the other greats are way to modest to say so.Its up to his peers to to rank him, people that are in a position to give an objective opinion, like Agassi who played them both.He said Roger was the best he ever played, thats some accolade, considering the hammerings he took from Pete in his prime.I suppose he will be judged on his slam record, but when you look at his other records ,and add all of them to his 13 slams, you must admit, the numbers are staggering. Its just ashame Pete and Roger were not the same generation, that would have been special.

Is it true that your a rampant hommo sexsual who frequents gay bars during the day and at night?
My point Carlos was and is - when Faderer passes Sampras record, then he will be the Best - Federer has said in an interview after winning the US Open last year - He will not class himself as being the best until he passes that record. Which in its self is a true statement.
every great sportsmen have their ups and their downs. Federer is the main man to beat. He is the best still and will be for a long time. However tennis now doesnt just have two great men as it did in the past years who were always competing against each other. there are now 4 maybe 5. In federer nadal murray djokovic and roddik. This years wimbeldon should be amazing. But comming back to my main point. federer is the man to beat. and is the best at the moment.
Austin, its good that you used to play, shows you do have some knowledge of the game.Federers achievments are not only his slam wins. His many other records show that he has been the most dominant champion of all time,ie consecutive weeks at n0 1,237 weeks, the next best was Connors at 160 weeks, nowhere near Roger.I think he will surpass Petes record of 14 slams.I wasnt bieng rude Austin,i just dont think you can class the other three you mentioned with Roger.Clearly Sampras and Federer are the best players in the open era,and i am a fan of both.for the record i am a player, and i used to coach aswell. On top of that i have been to over 40 matches ,including Federer, sampras,Mcenroe,Becker,Agassi,Nadal,Murray, and in my humble opinion,Federer is the best i have seen.
( CARLOS ) ?? I said he is a very good player - but so is Nadal, Murray, Djokovic and Tsonga. When federer over takes Pete Sampras record, then he will be the best and not before. When he equals his record IF he equals his record, He is one of the greatests I agree to that, But he is and wont be the best until he beats samprass record. Federer even said that himself. For the record Carlos i used to play tennis, Watch all the ATP & WTA. But when Federer himself says, He will not be the best player ever until he PASSES pete samprass record, Then i would rather listen to him than you.
WELL AS I SAID YESTERDAY MURRAY WOULD WIN IN 2 SETS AND HE DID. CAN HE WIN AUSTRALIAN OPEN I THINK HE HAS A GOOD CHANCE IF HIS BACK HOLDS UP. I AM NOT A MURRAY FAN BUT LETS GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE HE IS PLAYING SOME FAB TENNIS AND SO QUICK AROUND THE COURT.
ALISON.

A bon entendeur...
I hope the Press and others will keep the pressure off Andy. He needs to focus and being favourite I believe makes him nervous. He is a terrific player to watch and I hope he goes far in the Australian Open. This year might be too early for a GS win but I am sure it will come in time.
Andy Any Chance Of Tap Till Friday
Well Done Anday Murry Your Doing Scotland Proud Keep It Up And You Will Win Wimbedon And Be Called Sir Anday Murry Well Done Ma Bonny Lad From Robert & Maxie Park From Clydebank
Austin H,what are you talking about ? You say Federer is only the same as Nadal,Murray,Djokovic and tsonga !!! Have you ever watched any tennis ??? Nadal won 5 slams,Djokovic 1 slam, Murray 0 slams, tsonga 0 slams. Total 6 slams between them. Federer = 13 slams. Federer N0 1 for a RECORD 237 weeks ! holds open era record of 65 straight wins on grass and 56 straight wins on hard courts,Add 4 masters cup titles,14 masters series titles AND a record 10 straight slam final appearances, and record 18 straight Slam semi finals !!Do i need to go on?? CLEARLY he is NOT the same as the othes 4 you mentioned.Pathetic comment!
andy murray well done my son proved a lot of yr critics wrong u keep it up im english and proud to be british u the man
I have been following tennis for many years and not since Becker have I seen a player with such determination as Murray to overcome pysical flaws and improve their natural game.He will win a GS very soon
