Premier League - Zenit snub Arsenal Arshavin bid

Zenit St Petersburg have revealed they have turned down a bid from Arsenal for midfielder Andrei Arshavin.

The Gunners are hoping to sign the Russian schemer (pictured) as they look to bolster their attacking options in this month's transfer window.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been coy on his side's interest in Arshavin, but his club are believed to be leading the chase for the 27-year-old.

Arshavin is determined to leave Zenit this month after being frustrated in his attempts to move last summer.

Reports suggest Zenit are demanding a £20 million fee for Arshavin, but the Gunners value the 27-year-old at considerably less.

Zenit spokesman Alexei Petrov has confirmed Arsenal are the only club to have made an official approach for Arshavin, but that their initial offer was turned down.

"I can confirm that Zenit did get an official offer from Arsenal about Andrei Arshavin," Petrov told the Mail on Sunday. "It was rejected as insufficient.

"They offered about £10m. No new offers have arrived from them since. At the moment, Arsenal are the only club to have approached us about the player."

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will increase their offer for Arshavin with fresh reports suggesting Manchester City could hijack their move.

I belive we need fast striker but eto'o is already­ 27 and at most spend a few years at emirates..what­ arsenal's scout do now is good enough where they­ are all eye player that are fast like bafetimbi gomis­ or gervinho..they are fast...maybe the likes of obafemi­ martins can improve gunners...but be aware arsenal­ already have adebayor,rvp,vela,eduardo n bendtner...if­ wenger buy another striker it will close the young lads­ chances to play...

  6. Arshavin,.. though is a very prolific player that­ doesnt out of 20chances in a football match utilises­ one and missing 19 chances like ADEBAYOR. I admire him­ a lot with his goal scoring skills and tactis,.. i wish­ wenger could offer them something close to that 20m­ pounds. We all know that we need somebody as good as­ HENRY or even better to BANG enough goals 4 us. If i­ may suggest,... why dont wenger go for E'TO of­ barcelona???   8. Why be suprised at a russian club wanting so much­ money? There is quite a lot of money developing in­ russian football and he is a top-class player. So we­ should look for someone like cahill or fellaini or­ Valencia, they are maybe not quite as good but are much­ cheaper. And also we need yaya toure. COME ON YOU­ GUNNERS!!!

  10. Arshavin isn't worth 20m because he is 27 and­ hasn't been known as a world class player for his­ whole career. Zenit and Wenger need to meet half way­ and settle a deal at 15m becuase we do need him. Then­ spend 5-10m on a defensive midfielder or defender and­ we can challenge for the Champions League trophy!

  11. 20M for ashavin is not worth it. I think Wenger should ­ not entertain Zenit's request. I'd prefer he­ scout around for a midfielder closer to home like Jimmy­ Bullard from Fulham or West Ham's Jack Collison. ­ Rumours has it Wenger is facing competition from the­ Italian side for Boca Juniors midfielders Sebastian­ Battagia. Is it true?

  20. This is insane. Zenith are destroying their player.­ Arsenal does not have te money and the market is very­ calm. There is no money. Man City will not ask for him­ because they have a similar player with higher profile.
