Olympic champion Paul Hamm proved he could still impress with his gymnastics skills on all six apparatus when he won the all-round title at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas.
Hamm, competing in his first all-round event since the 2004 Athens Olympics, finished with a total of 185.85 and beat his nearest rival Raj Bhavsar by a margin of 7.25.
Like his performance in Athens, Hamm suffered a bad landing following his vault but that did not prevent him from showing that he could be in contention for the top prize again at this year's Beijing Games in August.
Hamm also won individual titles in floor exercise and parallel bars.
"This being my first competition, I didn't know exactly what to expect," said the 25-year-old, who took time off to go to college after his controversial win in Athens.
"I was happy that my training held together. I had a very good day, even with a couple of errors. There is always room for improvement."
Hamm became the first American man to win the all-round Olympic gold four years ago.
But he had to battle all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to keep his medal after the governing body in gymnastics announced he had been handed the gold in error.
The FIG admitted bronze medallist Yang Tae-young should have been awarded the gold as he had been incorrectly docked a 10th of a point from his parallel bars routine but the governing body refused to redistribute the medals.
The FIG's stand forced the South Koreans to appeal against the decision but CAS ruled in favour of Hamm.
