Former Hull forward Kearney has signed a two-year contract to replace Kemble, a victim of player power after dissent from captain Roy Asotasi last month.

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, who was thought to be the leading candidate for the role, will take a consultancy role to assist the outgoing Melbourne Storm assistant coach.

"I was honoured to play for the Kiwis over a long period of time and it's a huge thrill to now be appointed Kiwi coach," said Kearney.

"It's also great to know I'll have the chance to work alongside a coach like Wayne, who has achieved so much in the game and made such a fantastic contribution to rugby league over so many years.

"I've been lucky enough to learn from an excellent coach like Craig (Bellamy) and it's amazing now to know I'll be able to learn even more from someone who has done as much as Wayne has."

Australian Bennett added: "I'm keen to help New Zealand rugby league but I believe it's vital that the coach is a New Zealander.

"I couldn't think of a finer man for the job than Stephen and I'm really looking forward to helping him in any way I can.

"It's important that he's in the job long-term because you need that continuity when you're rebuilding a side."

NZRL chairman Ray Haffenden added: "We're absolutely delighted to announce Stephen and Wayne are joining forces with the Kiwis."

The new management team's first task will be to select and lead the team for the Centenary Test against Australia in Sydney in May.
