Portsmouth have brought in former Manchester United and England number two Brian Kidd to assist caretaker manager Paul Hart.
Kidd, 59, has been hired to work alongside Hart in first-team affairs while the club search for Tony Adams's permanent replacement.
Pompey sacked Adams on Monday following a run of nine Premier League matches without a win that has left the FA Cup-holders 16th in the table, two points off the bottom.
Hart told the club's official website: "Brian's a fantastic coach with a great track record.
"We've known each other for an awfully long time and I'm delighted he's coming here to assist me."
Portsmouth's next three matches will see them play Manchester City at home and face Stoke away before hosting Chelsea on March 3.
Following a brief spell in charge of Preston North End in 1986, Kidd returned to Manchester United - the club for which he scored in the 4-1 victory over Benfica in the 1968 European Cup final - as a youth team coach, and was installed as Alex Ferguson's assistant in 1991.
After winning four championships and two FA Cups, Kidd left Old Trafford to take up the manager's position at Blackburn Rovers in 1998 - the season United won their historic treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles.
However, it proved to be another ill-fated and short-lived tenure, and Kidd lasted just 11 months at the Ewood Park helm.
In 2003, following a spell at Leeds, he was hired by Sven-Goran Eriksson as England assistant manager, but ill health forced him to quit the position the following year.
Kidd returned to work in 2006 as number two at Sheffield United, but left last year after Bryan Robson was sacked.

Bring it on and lets get back to winning ways, the reason some teams want to see us go down is because there scared of us on and off the pitch.
