Valverde set for doping hearing

Eurosport - Wed, 11 Feb 20:21:00 2009

Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde has been summoned by Italian anti-doping authorities in relation to the Operation Puerto drugs scandal.

CYCLING 2008 Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) - 0

The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping prosecutor stated that the Caisse D'Epargne rider would appear next Monday morning to discuss possible violations of anti-doping rules.

Italian media said samples the 28-year-old gave at a doping control when last year's Tour de France entered Italy for a stage had matched DNA from files of the Operation Puerto case in Spain.

CONI's anti-doping unit could not be reached for comment.

"Although I am currently taking part in the Mallorca Challenge... I have made every possible verification and I can state for a fact that neither me nor my team have received any notification to appear before CONI or any other body," Valverde stated.

"However, I want to say again that I am ready to appear before any body that would require my presence to help in order to clear any doping-related matter."

The Spaniard added that he did not test positive during last year's Tour de France.

"It is certain that in the Prato Nevoso stage of the last Tour de France, the data that came from the tests I took did not show anything abnormal.

"I have no idea what they would be compared to."

A Madrid court closed the Puerto investigation into a blood doping ring last year after concluding that no criminal offences had been committed, although Spanish media last month reported it could be reopened.

But authorities in Rome have vowed to press ahead with probes into how the affair affected Italy.

Italian and Spanish riders have been especially caught up in cycling's doping scandals.

Valverde, who topped the world rankings last year, competed in the 2007 World Championships despite the governing UCI trying to block his participation because he had been linked to the Puerto affair.

If found guilty of a doping offence, Valverde could face a two-year ban.

  2. djwiners - CONI is the ITALIAN Olympic Committee so the had to wait for that stage because it was the only stage of the tour that actually crossed into Italy.. it's the only stage that gave CONI some semblance of jurisdiction over Valverde.

martinasoden - if people use a slight variation of the a CERA type of EPO (like Ricco and Pieopoli got caught with) they can still evade even the UCI's new biological passport system.. and their are many other undetectable drugs as well.. perfluoro carbons and other agent that let plasma carry oxygen... trust me riders still have lots of options... remember Basso, Ullrich and Valverde didn't fail any dope test.. they got caught in a police investigation... cheating cyclist that fail dope tests, even today are either sloppy, stupid or just unlucky.

  3. I say that Italy should let this go. It's been years since the Operation Puerto took place, and he has not failed a doping test since. I say he is clean now, and a good cyclist. Operation Puerto should be closed, the cyclists who are cheating now are getting caught. Thats enough justice for me.

  4. wat i dont understand is why they had to wait for that stage of the tour de france to pbtain dna. Im sure they could of obtained it some other way?! Im a big valverde fan but if hes done wrong he still should be punished for it. We need a clean sport now. The uci has upped drugs test so much now that its just goin to be suicide to cheat.

  5. they are picking on the Spanish because the Italians are legitimately trying to clean up their house (at least CONI is.. Italian federation still wants to cover everything up.. they tried with Basso but CONI was having none of it) and the Spanish are still in sweep everything under the rug.. c'mon... 50 bags of blood linked to mostly spanish cyclist and the Spanish do not test even ONE bag for DNA match... only the Germans do with Ullrich and CONI with Basso..

the Italians are is pissed because they are doing the right thing and their cyclist are getting suspensions and yet Spanish cyclists are caught red handed and Spanish authorities are doing absolutely nothing about it... it's about fairness...

  8. armstong's independant testing is no more, read the next story. Valverde wasn't implicated in operación puerto originally because fuentes said he wasn't same as with contador i think. i'm sure he was involved with something, but he's a nice guy, a bit stupid to talk to but nice.

  9. They should also test Valverde's dog's DNA.

Why are they picking on a Spanish cyclist? Could the Spanish wins in the last three tours, last yrs Giro, Vuelta, Olympics etc have been assisted in some way?

Thank goodness the sport is entering a new, clean age with Armstrong leading the way with his independant testing programme.
