FA Cup hero Jimmy Montgomery has been appointed as Sunderland's first official club ambassador.

The former goalkeeper, whose double-save during the Black Cats' famous 1973 final victory over Leeds has gone down in Wearside folklore, will attend functions on behalf of the club and mingle with guests in the hospitality suites at the Stadium of Light on matchdays.

Manager Martin O'Neill, who played with Montgomery at Nottingham Forest, said: "I had the pleasure of playing with Jim when we were both managed by Brian Clough.

"He was just a fantastic person - oh, and a magnificent goalkeeper as well."
