Town were indebted to goalkeeper Jonny Brain after he saved Dave Rainford's penalty in the 58th minute and then superbly turned over Jon Nurse's left-footed drive.
The Town stopper preserved his side's precious away victory when he blocked Christopher Moore's close-range effort in the closing stages.
Relegation-threatened Town had hardly troubled home goalkeeper Tony Roberts though Gareth Evans did have a first-half strike ruled out for an infringement.
