Megson puts Premier League first

Tue 11 Mar, 02:30 PM

Gary Megson is expected to take a shadow Bolton squad to Lisbon for his side's UEFA Cup last-16 second-leg clash with Sporting on Thursday. The Whites dropped into the bottom three of the Premier League following the weekend results ahead of Sunday's relegation showdown at Wigan.

That match is of far greater concern to Megson than the tie with Sporting, which means most of the players who started in the 1-1 draw at the Reebok Stadium last Thursday are likely to be left behind.

"I make no bones about it, while our focus will be on trying to get a result in Lisbon, our ultimate aim is making sure we stay in the Premier League," said Megson.

"As always there will be deliberations as to who plays, but the main deliberation will be the fact we play Wigan on Sunday."

Captain Kevin Nolan, who missed the initial tie with a back injury, is unlikely to figure, with Megson adding: "He'll be considered, but I make no apologies, because the important game is Wigan."
