River Plate plot Aimar return

Tue 11 Mar, 02:00 PM

River Plate president Jose Maria Aguilar is trying to bring Real Zaragoza midfielder Pablo Aimar back to the Argentinian giants. The 28-year-old is currently involved in a Spanish Primera Liga relegation scrap with Zaragoza but has indicated that if River approached him, he would "evaluate it".

The Rio Cuarto-born playmaker left El Monumental to join Valencia during the 2000-01 season, before joining Zaragoza six years later.

And Aguilar believes that the time is right for his return, telling Radio La Red: "Pablo left River a long time ago and he has to come back.

"We have a good squad but we will try to make some effort to bring big names in. It is the right time for Aimar to come back."

Should Zaragoza be prepared to let Aimar leave the club, Aguilar admitted that the player would have to be prepared to take a pay cut for the move to happen.

He said: "Football is being managed by money and depends on players. If I pretend to sign a player with the same contract he has in Europe, negotiations turn very difficult."

Aguilar is not so confident about his chances of persuading out-of-favour Real Madrid striker Javier Saviola to return to the club.

He said: "He is stubborn because he will not come back until he has what he considers a good season in Europe."
