Seagulls clinch valuable away win

Tue 11 Mar, 11:45 PM

Brighton came from behind to beat play-off rivals Walsall, who had midfielder Richard Taundry sent off, 2-1 in their clash at Banks's Stadium. It was Brighton's first win in seven away games, and they deserved it for the way they defended under pressure and caused problems to the home defence on the break.

The Saddlers took the lead in the 29th minute when defender Anthony Gerrard powered in a header from Lee Holmes' free-kick, but five minutes later Nicky Forster darted across the edge of the box before beating Clayton Ince with a fierce low drive.

Walsall dominated much of the second half and Kevin Betsy headed one chance over from close range while Glenn Murray managed a similar miss for the visitors in the 74th minute.

But Murray made sure of all three points for Brighton 12 minutes from the time when he bundled a cross from Ian Westlake over the line at the far post in a challenge with Gerrard.

Any hopes Walsall had of saving a point vanished when 18-year-old Taundry, one of Walsall's subs, was sent off for stamping on Adam El-Abd after being fouled in the 89th minute.
