Are you brave enough to leave Tiger Woods out of your Fantasy golf team this week? Neither are we!
However, who might challenge him at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week? And which selections are not as attractive as they might seem? Tee 'Em Up offers some thoughts.
The Tournament: Arnold Palmer Invitational
The Course: Bay Hill Club and Lodge Orlando, Fla.
The Bay Hill course has become a trickier proposition since last year when it was moved down to a par 70. That turned a couple of short par fives into long par fours which has taken some of the easy birdies off the cards of the bigger hitters. Apparently the greens are a little patchy this week with some brown spots around which could level the putting field out, but concentration is paramount on this course - it is not they type of venue you can just smash your way around.
A List
Tee 'Em Up: The only reason not to pick Tiger Woods is if you are playing catch-up in your league and need to mix things up. Tiger hasn't finished better than 20th in this tournament since 2003 but so what? Before that he won it four years in a row. Woods has won seven of the last eight tournaments and is playing at a super human level. Pair him with Vijay Singh who could finally come good this week at one of his favourite courses. He is the defending champion here and is also a three time runner-up. Phil Mickelson, as always, remains a solid back-up to Woods. He hasn't played in this tournament much in recent years but had top three finishes in 2002 and 2001 which proves he is not adverse to it.
Cut 'Em - There are a lot of duds we could advise against but out of the realistic options we recommend that you pass on two highly talented, but off form, players. Sergio Garcia may tempt after top 10 finishes in this event in the past three seasons but again he comes into the event with no form to speak of; while Jim Furyk has had a very slow start to the season and the former world number three has now slipped to eight in the rankings.
B List
Tee 'Em Up: Keep picking Stewart Appleby until he does something to convince you otherwise. Yet another top 10 finish from the Australian last week reinforces his tag as Mr. Consistency on the Tour this year (five top 10s in five tournaments). He has also finished runner-up twice here in the past if you needed any more convincing. Also, despite his last collapse last week, don't be afraid to pick Stewart Cink again - he is just playing good golf this year as three top three finishes in his last four events illustrates. His record here is a bit patchy but a second place in 2003 shows he can play here when in form
Cut 'Em: Again we are going to oppose Paul Casey this week. He is a real boom or bust player fantasy wise as he often follows a brilliant round with a shocker and vice versa. The big problem is knowing what type of round is coming next and there is nothing more frustrating than picking a player on the wrong rounds. Take that difficult decision out of your hands and pick somebody else - especially as there are more reliable options elsewhere. We also think that the emotion of winning last week might just get the better of Sean O'Hair this week and that tiredness will see him ultimately struggle.
C List
Tee 'Em Up: Luke Donald really is the Tiger Woods of the C list - he is the quality player in that field - two top three finishes already this season makes him joint third favourite with the bookmakers for this event and it is hard to see why he is in the same bracket as the likes of Dicky Pride. Why not pair him with another Brit in Lee Westwood who has shown great form this season to move up to second in the European Order of Merit. Veteran Corey Pavin could be worth a look too - he has three top 15 finishes this year and while he missed the cut last year, he was 5th in 2005 and snuck into the top 20 the following year.
Cut 'Em: Two-time US Open winner Lee Janzen turned back the clock last week with a stunning opening round of 65, however he only finished the tournament T10 and on even par after following it up with rounds 74, 75, and 70. His previous best this season was T34 and he missed the cut the last time he played here. So our message is don't get excited by his 65 and keep him out of your team.
