Premier League - Fantasy choose 'em or lose 'em

Eurosport - Fri, 11 Apr 16:19:00 2008

It's fast approaching squeaky bum time in the Premier League, and that means we're getting to crunch time in Fantasy Football too. Here we give you a few tips ahead of this weekend's action.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Champions League Chelsea Chelsea-Fenerbahce Ballack - 0

Goalkeepers

CHOOSE 'EM

Chelsea boast the second meanest defence in the Premier League, albeit with Petr Cech or Carlo Cudicini usually in between the sticks, but Hilario is set to benefit from the same protection afforded to the Blues' regular keepers at Wigan on Monday. And at just 6.09, he's by far the best goalkeeping buy of the weekend. Scott Carson at 6.77 could be worth a try if not, given that Aston Villa are playing none other than the toothless and already relegated Derby at Pride Park.

LOSE 'EM

Those with Cech (14.04) or Cudicini (15.97) in their teams need to offload them ASAP after the latest keeping crisis to hit west London, while Arsenal's number one (hear that, Jens? N-u-m-b-e-r o-n-e) Manuel Almunia could well be in for a busy afternoon at Old Trafford - if you sell him now, you'll get 11.04 for him.

Defenders

CHOOSE 'EM

Bolton may well be scrapping for their lives against West Ham on Saturday, but a Hammers' back line including George McCartney (8.69) is more than capable of keeping a clean sheet at the Reebok. If he's good enough for Milan... Another Italy-bound defender (a real one this time) is Olof Mellberg, and by virtue of him lining up against Derby this weekend, he should be a good buy at 8.38. With Manchester City faltering as the season draws to a close, and with Sunderland on a real roll, Danny Higginbotham represents good value at 7.93 for the clash at the Stadium of Light - and with so many ex-United players in the Black Cats line-up, there's sure to be plenty of incentive to put one over City.

LOSE 'EM

Emmanuel Eboue. Get rid of him. Now. And not because Arsenal have a tricky trip up to Old Trafford. Oh no, he needs to go immediately because he is a liability, no matter who the opposition is. And it's also time to offload Nedum Onuoha too, if for entirely different reasons. The Manchester City youngster is out for the rest of the season, and can be traded in for 10.80. Fulham's Brede Hangeland (8.74) endured an afternoon to forget last weekend and with the Cottagers set for a relegation scrap with Reading on Saturday, perhaps the Norwegian stopper could do with a day off.

Midfielders

CHOOSE 'EM

Thanks to an injury to Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto is set to start for Arsenal at Old Trafford and at just 4.88 he looks a tempting proposition. But be careful, the Brazilian, much like United's Anderson (5.39) is a notoriously low point scorer and is probably better left alone. But Bolton skipper Kevin Nolan is always capable of getting on the scoresheet from midfield and having been sidelined recently through injury and suspension, he is eminently affordable at 5.23. Also returning at the Madejski is Reading's Marek Matejovsky - another midfielder more than capable of finding the back of the net - who is the best bargain buy of the week at a mere 2.99.

LOSE 'EM

Birmingham's Damien Johnson (3.52) starts a two-match ban so it's time to consign him to the scrapheap, while Everton's Mikel Arteta (15.44) is pregnant (or something like that - he has stomach and abdominal pains) and is best off being offloaded. Everton players represent a good deal this week, so too anyone from Chelsea, as both clubs are playing twice. So why not go for Manuel Fernandes (6.73) from Everton or perhaps even splash out 10.65 on Michael Ballack (pictured)? Meanwhile, Mathieu Flamini (8.11) is crocked and anyone silly enough to have Robbie Savage in their side should a) go and see a doctor and b) sell him for a whopping 2.94.

Forwards

CHOOSE 'EM

With two games to play, Yakubu is this week's must-have item and at 13.08, the hungry Nigerian is reasonably priced. Gabriel Agbonlahor has found his shooting boots once more and with a 'test' against Derby coming up, you have to fancy the Villa striker to net. Given his recent form, Argentine sensation Mauro Zarate is worth a punt at 10.02 while David Nugent might be a decent outside bet if you're short on cash - he stands a chance of playing against Newcastle and is a snip at 3.39. Oh, and that Afonso Alves is looking good value at 8.36 all of a sudden - all he's got to do is score past a second string Tottenham keeper.

LOSE 'EM

There are three players who need to be lost this week, although you'd be mad to have them in your side in the first place. Milan Baros, Olivier Kapo and Emmanuel Villa are all doubtful for the weekend, so click that mouse and send them packing.
