ORLANDO, Florida (AFP) - Tayshaun Prince's hook shot with 8.9 seconds to play lifted the Detroit Pistons to a 90-89 victory over the Orlando Magic Saturday and within one win of advancing in the National Basketball Association playoffs.
The victory gave the Pistons a commanding 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference second-round series.
Richard Hamilton scored 32 points for the Pistons, who had to make do without All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups, who was sidelined by a strained right hamstring.
Prince put in his running shot to give Detroit a one-point lead after a Billups was hurt in the first quarter in a 111-86 loss to the Magic in game three. After a few days of treatment, which included running in the team hotel, it was determined he couldn't play in this one.
Hamilton and Prince took up the slack, Prince scoring 17 points that were capped by his game-winner.
Jameer Nelson had made 1-of-2 free throws to give Orlando an 89-88 lead with 44.8 seconds left.
The Pistons then went to Rasheed Wallace, who missed a turnaround jumper off the right side of the rim.
But the rebound was was run down in traffic by Antonio McDyess. The Pistons then swung the ball to the right wing, from where Prince drove across the lane and put in the hook.
On the ensuing possession, Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu missed a tough layup as time expired.
The Pistons had erased a 15-point, third-quarter deficit en route to the victory. They will host game five on Tuesday.
After climbing back into the game in the third, Detroit took their biggest lead in the fourth on Wallace's jumper with 5:20 left to make it 82-75.
Turkoglu, who scored 14 points in the final period, scored six points in an 8-0 run - including a 3-pointer that capped the burst and gave Orlando an 83-82 lead with 3:05 to play.
After two free throws from Hamilton with 2:47 remaining, Turkoglu hit another shot 3-pointer 86-84.
Hamilton answered with a jumper, but Turkoglu scored again to keep the Magic ahead 88-86 with 1:14 left.
Magic guard Keyon Dooling then made a crucial mistake, shoving Hamilton to the floor and picking up personal and technical fouls.
Hamilton made 2-of-3 free throws to tie the game at 88-88 with 59.9 seconds.
Orlando star Dwight Howard made little impact, collecting just eight points and 12 rebounds.
