ORLANDO, Florida (AFP) - Tayshaun Prince's hook shot with 8.9 seconds to play lifted the Detroit Pistons to a 90-89 victory over the Orlando Magic Saturday and within one win of advancing in the National Basketball Association playoffs.

The victory gave the Pistons a commanding 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference second-round series.

In Cleveland, the Cavaliers avoided going into a 3-0 hole, recovering from two road defeats to beat the Boston Celtics 108-84 and narrow the gap in their Eastern Conference series to 2-1.

In Orlando, Richard Hamilton scored 32 points for the Pistons, who had to make do without All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups, who was sidelined by a strained right hamstring suffered in game three.

Hamilton and Prince took up the slack, Prince scoring 17 points that were capped by his game-winner.

Jameer Nelson had made 1-of-2 free throws to give Orlando an 89-88 lead with 44.8 seconds left.

The Pistons then went to Rasheed Wallace, who missed a turnaround jumper off the right side of the rim.

But the rebound was was run down in traffic by Antonio McDyess. The Pistons then swung the ball to the right wing, and Prince drove across the lane from there.

"Second-chance points killed us today," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "They had 18 and, on top of that, they shot over 50 percent in the second half. It became their game, a grind-it-out, half-court game, and they played that game a lot better than us."

On the ensuing possession, Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu missed a tough layup as time expired.

The Pistons had erased a 15-point, third-quarter deficit en route to the victory. They will host game five on Tuesday.

Nelson insisted the Magic wouldn't let the Pistons dictate in that contest.

"I'm not trying to be arrogant or cocky or anything like that, but we let this game slip out of our hands tonight," Nelson said. "And we let game two slip out of our hands.

"We're going to win the next game in Detroit."

After climbing back into the game in the third, Detroit took their biggest lead in the fourth on Wallace's jumper with 5:20 left to make it 82-75.

Turkoglu, who scored 14 points in the final period, scored six points in an 8-0 run - including a 3-pointer that capped the burst and gave Orlando an 83-82 lead with 3:05 to play.

After two free throws from Hamilton with 2:47 remaining, Turkoglu hit another shot 3-pointer 86-84.

Hamilton answered with a jumper, but Turkoglu scored again to keep the Magic ahead 88-86 with 1:14 left.

Magic guard Keyon Dooling then made a crucial mistake, shoving Hamilton to the floor and picking up personal and technical fouls.

Hamilton made 2-of-3 free throws to tie the game at 88-88 with 59.9 seconds.

Orlando star Dwight Howard made little impact, collecting just eight points and 12 rebounds.
