The third-seeded Russian, who won titles in Auckland and Sydney in January, broke serve four times and next plays Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino or Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan.
Eighth seed Nadia Petrova went through when Czech opponent Iveta Benesova retired due to a viral illness with the Russian leading 6-0 2-1.
France's Marion Bartoli, the 11th seed, was upset 7-6 6-2 by unseeded Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada while 15th-seeded Chinese Zheng Jie beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4 6-4.
World number one Dinara Safina, winner of the Italian Open on Saturday, has a bye into the second round and will play Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro or Li Na of China.

The ranking-points that Dementieva has lost were for reaching the final of the tournament at Berlin that finished on 11th May 2008.
can anyone out there explain how the womens rankings work dementieva had no points to defend in rome as she did not play last year, yet shes lost 400 pushing her to fifth in the rankings???
