Ryan Jones will captain Wales on their summer tour to Canada and the USA after being overlooked for the British & Irish Lions in South Africa.
Ospreys' back-row star Jones (pictured), who led Wales to the Six Nations title and Grand Slam last season, was among three national skippers shunned for Lions duty.
Jones could still make the trip, as the Lions are likely to need a replacement for Munster flanker Alan Quinlan, who faces a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, but Leicester and England prospect Tom Croft is favourite for any call-up.
Wales' caretaker coach Robin McBryde has named a squad of 32 players, but those selected from the Scarlets or Newport Gwent Dragons will miss out.
One of those teams face a Heineken Cup play-off game scheduled for the same day as Wales' opening tour fixture against Canada in Toronto.
The Ospreys provide three uncapped players in full-back Gareth Owen, centre Jonathan Spratt and prop Craig Mitchell, while a sizeable Cardiff Blues' contingent includes wing Chris Czekaj, who was last capped on tour in Australia in 2007 before suffering a serious leg injury.
The Blues also provide uncapped wing Richard Mustoe and back-row forward Sam Warburton, and there is a recall for their in-form hooker Gareth Williams.
The Dragons and Scarlets, meanwhile, are also well represented on the uncapped front, with the Dragons providing full-back Jason Tovey, plus flankers Dan Lydiate and Lewis Evans, and the Scarlets feature a trio of rookies in centre Jon Davies, plus forwards Josh Turnbull and Rob McCusker.
McBride said: "We have approached the task of selecting the right blend of youth and experience and with one eye on the future, but a clear focus on the task ahead.
"We are playing two Tests, where the opposition will be gunning for us in their own backyard and we have to show the respect we have for this Wales jersey and put in two performances to make the nation proud."

great to see the welsh management taking a contingent of up and coming youngsters and hopefully some of these will form the backbone of the welsh team over the next few seasons
This tour is the perfect op. for ryan jones, hook, d. jones and ian gough to rediscover the fluidity that helped the team gel back in 08. No J.Robinson is suprising, but maybe the coachin staff are lookin at the fact hes off to Toulon or another french club next year, so he wont be part of future welsh squads?
The main goal of this tour if i was coach wud be to get the lineout up to scratch. Nothing fancy like Matfield Ali Williams Bakkes Botha et al, just get it to a level where we can guarantee we can secure our own ball. Its been the biggest flaw in the armour recently.
What does Jamie Robinson have to do to get a place in a Welsh Squad? He's been outsanding this season, but it's great to see Czekaj back. Oh, and jack2tufy/orange2tuf, go crawl back under your stone you xenophobic bigot.
Spot on comment from Moggie but yet again we have a moron making inane comments in reply. Sounds like Orange2tuf has changed his tag to cover his gutless vanishing act after Munster took a terrible beating. Anyway this about the Welsh team, so sod off
why?
its the right decision by the Lions not to take Jones in the end. even as a welsh fan i can say this quite easily, because he simply hasnt shown any form or ability this season. if the Lions had been last summer, i think no-one cud argue he wud almost certainyl have been captain of the side because of the grand-slam winnign form, but times have changed in 12 months, hes looked unfit and unready for test matches, and taking him wud have denied another player his place
if quinlan is banned, Tom Croft shud go and Jones shud still go to N.America, lead the side to some good displays and victories and come back stronger.
