Premier League - Fergie: Ronaldo strop 'fabulous'

Eurosport - Mon, 11 May 15:11:00 2009

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson brushed off the petulant reaction of Cristiano Ronaldo to his second-half substitution at Old Trafford and claimed it was exactly the kind of response he wanted.

2008-2009 Manchester United-Manchester City Alex Ferguson Cristiano Ronaldo - 0

Ronaldo was substituted an hour into United's 2-0 win against Manchester City after earlier driving home a 30-yard free-kick to put the Red Devils in front.

The win took United to within four points of an 18th league championship, although it did not seem the 24-year-old World Player of the Year was in a mood to celebrate, swiping angrily at a bib as he made his way off the field before sitting in the dug-out shaking his head.

"It is great that he wanted to play on," said Ferguson. "It is fabulous. But I have to look at the big picture. He produced an incredible performance against Arsenal on Tuesday. He ran his socks off."

He added: "Now I have Wednesday and Saturday to look after. There is no problem."

Ferguson refused discuss the Carlos Tevez situation.

In an interview published on Monday morning, Tevez admitted his United days were almost at an end, with the Old Trafford hierarchy not even making an offer to keep him when his loan deal expires in four games' time.

Ferguson still picked the Argentina star this afternoon and was rewarded with a superb goal just before the break.

Tevez reacted by ignoring all efforts at a communal celebration, running to the dug-out where he cupped his hands round his ears in order to listen to the celebrations as, directly in front of him, Ferguson looked on.

"If he keeps scoring there will be absolutely no problem," said Ferguson before declaring, "nothing has changed" when asked if there had been any developments on the Tevez contract situation.

  3. i was born in 1990 and i have celebrated liverpool"s title win and now i am 19 years old still no hope for a league tittle.what a shame.all the talk by gerrad about winning the tittle is nothing.only this year MAN UNITED are equalling the liverpool record and possibly surpass it come on 19 years is a long wait

  4. You are right Jeemy, Fergie knows what he is doing. But I feel so sorry for Tevez though. He is a brilliant player and it showed yesterday when he scored that incredible goal against Man City. I dont want to see him going to Chelsea. He wouldnt be happy there. His heart is with Man United. Why dont Fergie sign him up. The Man U fans love him to bits.

  6. more people who know nuthing johnxp. Fergie didnt have money when he got the man utd job and he didnt spend loads he won three titles spending next to nuthing cuz he only bought cantona when he won his first title. U should really take a look at your football knowledge cuz still to this day he is the only manager to bring through so many players from the youth set up at united and still wn trophies. Beckham, the nevilles, giggs, sharpe, scholes, butt, brown, fletcher, eagles, evans to name a few.and each of these players has won the premiership with united. Fergie made united into the club they are and desrves the money he gets to spend nowadays. At least we didnt get the money handed to us we won trophies and made it ourself unlike teams like city and chelsea.

  8. xxjohnxpxx- that theory is complete rubbish, look what has happened at other teams that have had money thrown at them, they either get no where or they fall apart because the "stars" get too big for their boots. Fergies skills lie in man management aswell as football management, something which money cant buy, but whic often gets overlooked by idiotic fans like you.

  11. Ronaldo is a great and a phenomenal player, possibly the best but his arrogance and character does not exemplify the marks of the best player. I'm not trying to hate on this great talent but he is definitely not the best as his recent reaction and show of pride has proven so.

  12. Whether you guys like it or not... Christiano Ronaldo is a special player and deep down in your hearts you all wish he played for your team! There are players with worse attitude out there *cough*Drogba*cough* with half the talent... so i rather have C. Ronaldo in my team.

  18. Andrew G, our second European Cup against Bayern was won with two goals both scored in stoppage time by......two substitutes! Sherringham and Solksjaer were their names. It's okay for you to be passionate about your team, well done. It's okay to dislike every other team on the planet if that's what you choose to do. If you want to argue against another teams achievements, being in possession of a few facts might help though. Also, please bear in mind that for as many goals scored in stoppage time by United, there's one for Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal too, and probably many other clubs up and down the country, regardless of what league they play in. United, like all of the very best teams, never quit. They keep playing and keep trying until the final whistle. If they didn't, they wouldn't be the best. Talks of conspiracy theories just don't hold water. If it were Liverpool in Uniteds position, you'd be cheering, and any talk of conspiracy by Liverpool would be dismissed as sour grapes. I know it's tough for any die-hard fan to take, but this season, Liverpool have been second best to United. Good luck for next year.

From David, on Mon 11 May 2:47PM
  19. It is always entertaining reading these threads from a neutral point of view when it is Man U v Liverpool. The usual banter/argument is taken to another gormless level by Andrew G.
Just picking on a couple of things, when referring to the added time against Bayern he states 'no subs', how did Sheringham & Solskjaer get on? The playing with honesty has got to be the joke of the decade.
But I think we should excuse him since his use of "Nando" suggests he is about twelve years old.
