Transfers - Gossip Shop: Tevez to Chelsea

Eurosport - Mon, 11 May 19:27:00 2009

After Carlos Tevez smacked the ball in off the post in the Manchester derby, he wheeled away and cupped his hands to his ears.

2008-2009 Manchester United Carlos Tevez - 0

But what exactly was he listening for?

Was is the adoration of an Old Trafford crowd who spent most of yesterday afternoon chanting 'Fergie, sign him up'?

Was it the sound of a contract offer from United landing on his doormat at home while, somewhere in Switzerland, £30 million worth of gold bars were transferred to a stack marked 'MSI'?

Was it the clamour of top European clubs squabbling over the Argentine's signature?

Or was he just trying to hear Kia Joorabchian's surreptitious mobile phone call, conducted with his hand over his mouth lest anyone lip-read his utterances.

Joorabchian is the kingpin of MSI, the mysterious group that still holds Tevez's playing rights.

He is the man demanding £30m for United to turn their two-year loan of Tevez into a permanent deal, and who is now shopping him around Europe's top clubs.

It remains a mystery why he chose the posh seats at Old Trafford as the perfect place to conduct top secret transfer negotiations, but it certainly allowed today's tabloids to put words into his expertly-concealed mouth.

Words such as Tottenham and Hotspur, who have selected Tevez as the target of this summer's persistent but ultimately futile pursuit of a big name.

Otherwise it's the usual, obvious, suspects, such as Real Madrid , Chelsea and Manchester City.

Whether any of the above would be willing to shell out £30m for the rich man's Craig Bellamy remains to be seen, however.

Anyway, City do not need a busy, diminutive centre-forward. They need a big fella with more ability than Felipe Caicedo who, while willing, is hardly going to carry Mark Hughes's side into the Champions League.

Hughes is targeting players who have Premier League experience as, even if he survives this summer, he cannot afford another season of transition.

The wildly overrated Roque Santa Cruz remains the most likely option, but GS would not put it past City to get their hands on much-maligned Nicklas Bendtner or even Didier Drogba.

Arsenal's defensive frailties were exposed yet again yesterday as Chelsea romped to a 4-1 win at the Emirates.

How does Arsene Wenger aim to put things right? By signing a striker, of course!

In this case, Andrei Arshavin's old mucker Pavel Pogrebnyak of Zenit St Petersburg and Russia.

Celtic have distanced themselves from reports they are set to offer Michael Owen a pay-as-you-play deal - a new low for the embattled striker.

Birmingham might still fancy England's former golden boy, but will make priorities of signing Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra and Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis.

And expect the three promoted clubs to have an almighty bun fight over Joe Ledley, who has rejected a new contract with Cardiff City.

  7. Hasn't written for a long time... But has always been here.
Please CHELSEA!!! DO BUY TEVEZ!!! Get rid of the evermoaning Drogba and get a decent striker in Tevez. We made a terrible error when Torres was avaliable and we didn't get him. Why wouldn't you want him, especially with all the money were made avaliable. Now we have a great chance to sign a great player. So do it, don't waste your time. Tevez iz worth 30 mill.

  11. Lovely - working class people are priced out of the game and are now classed as 'armchair fans'. Nonsense! I'd love to go to EVERY single one of my club's games, but I can't afford the ticket -HOW DARE YOU TELL ME I'M NOT A PROPER FAN! I've played football since I could stand and watched the game since before that. I'm a Sunderland fan who LITERALLY suffers every week to the point where I save my sedatives for games. Don't you dare tell me I don't care!!!
Tevez is 'owned' (i.e. under contract to a third party) and he is now a slave - wtf!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?
A slave earns NOTHING and generally has to work in shackles, no?
A lot needs to change in football - mainly the fact that the best teams get more money than lesser teams, further unbalancing an already lop-sided playing field, thus making the 'sport' almost as predictable as an F1 race after the first corner.
We know every year who's in with a chance of winning something - that's not exactly sporting to those making up the numbers...and I haven't even got started on the refereeing bias...
I guess I'll leave that for you lot to debate in your own inimitable manner.
    FTM!

you are the sort of manu fan who gives the club a bad name, blinkered, full of himself, and probably the first bloke to turn of the tv when the games not going your way( cause if you went to the ground and spouted that BS you get your southern mouth filled in).
stay at home, pay your sky subscription like a good armchair fan and leave the commentary to those who know better.

  13. TEVEZ IS STILL ILLEGALLY PLAYING IN THE UK. ANY OTHER COMMENTS ARE IRRELEVANT.HE IS STILL OWNED BY A THIRD PARTY. WEST HAM GOT FINED FOR THIS. HOW CAN THIS LEAGUE PROFESS TO BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD WHEN IT IS RUN SO POORLY.

FOOTBALL IS A SHAM, AND ITS NOT GOING TO GET BETTER UNTIL PEOPLE START THINKING PAST THEIR OWN SELFISH DESIRES( MY TEAM MUST ALWAYS WIN) AND START CONSIDERING WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE GAME. THE NEW BREED OF FOOTBALL FAN, THOSE THAT ARRIVED POST PREMIER LEAGUE INTRODUCTION ARE NOT ONLY CASH COWS FOR THE PEOPLE EXPLOITING FOOTBALL (KIA JOORABCHIAN) BUT ACTUALLY CARE SO LITTLE ABOUT THE GAME (DESPITE WHAT THEY MIGHT TELL YOU) THAT THEY DONT EVEN SEE THE INHERANT UNFAIRNESS IN THE TEVEZ SAGA.

AS LONG AS MANU GET THEIR MAN, I SUPPOSE THE MAJORITY WILL BE HAPPY.

ENJOY YOUR "ENTERTAINMENT" BECAUSE IT SURE AINT "SPORT"

  17. they've only give him the contract (if this is true) because sir slakarse ferguson doe's not want him to go anywhere else. this is just greed. why not let the lad see what he can do for a struggling side.

  18. Comment 160. We can't barter Tevez. We don't own him. He's only with us on loan. At the end of the season, he'll leave United. I don't know where he'll go, but I am sure it wont be for 30M. No one will pay that much for him. The agency that own him ( horrible term, smacks of slavery ) are too greedy and have put an unrealistic price on him. United wont be held to ransom. They've proved in the past with the sale of Beckham, Van Nistelrooy, Staam and many others, that no one player is bigger than the club. If MSI want to put Tevez in a shop window for 30M, they need to realise he'll be sitting in the window for a long time.

  19. from what i understand is that either tevez stays at man utd or hes off to spain
barcelona are very interested as a couple of their top names stars are on the move
as their contracts are almost up and they want to cash in.. arsenal will make a bid
for santa cruz but only half hearted as wengers purse strings are tighter than a
ducks backside and man city..well as long as mark hughes is at the helm
they aint gonna sign diddly squat no-one worth buying anyway and the drog
well he aint going anywhere not just yet but there will be a lot of changes at chelsea
spurs are gonna make a strong bid for downing and could be their first signing, will
they hold on to lennon and is another story..
