After Carlos Tevez smacked the ball in off the post in the Manchester derby, he wheeled away and cupped his hands to his ears.

But what exactly was he listening for?

Was is the adoration of an Old Trafford crowd who spent most of yesterday afternoon chanting 'Fergie, sign him up'?

Was it the sound of a contract offer from United landing on his doormat at home while, somewhere in Switzerland, £30 million worth of gold bars were transferred to a stack marked 'MSI'?

Was it the clamour of top European clubs squabbling over the Argentine's signature?

Or was he just trying to hear Kia Joorabchian's surreptitious mobile phone call, conducted with his hand over his mouth lest anyone lip-read his utterances.

Joorabchian is the kingpin of MSI, the mysterious group that still holds Tevez's playing rights.

He is the man demanding £30m for United to turn their two-year loan of Tevez into a permanent deal, and who is now shopping him around Europe's top clubs.

It remains a mystery why he chose the posh seats at Old Trafford as the perfect place to conduct top secret transfer negotiations, but it certainly allowed today's tabloids to put words into his expertly-concealed mouth.

Words such as Tottenham and Hotspur, who have selected Tevez as the target of this summer's persistent but ultimately futile pursuit of a big name.

Otherwise it's the usual, obvious, suspects, such as Real Madrid , Chelsea and Manchester City.

Whether any of the above would be willing to shell out £30m for the rich man's Craig Bellamy remains to be seen, however.

Anyway, City do not need a busy, diminutive centre-forward. They need a big fella with more ability than Felipe Caicedo who, while willing, is hardly going to carry Mark Hughes's side into the Champions League.

Hughes is targeting players who have Premier League experience as, even if he survives this summer, he cannot afford another season of transition.

The wildly overrated Roque Santa Cruz remains the most likely option, but GS would not put it past City to get their hands on much-maligned Nicklas Bendtner or even Didier Drogba.

  2. If Ferguson payed over 30 million for Berbatov, then­ Tevez should be worth TWICE AS MUCH! Let's get­ real, Tevez is a better player than Berbatov, he brings­ much more to a team than the bulgarian does, he's a­ better professional and on top of that he's much­ younger (he's only 24) which means that in the long­ run he's a much better prospect. Tever has actually­ scored more goals than Berbatav this season (15 to 14­ from the bulgarian) despite playing much less. Who are­ we trying to fool here when we say that Berbatov is­ better and more important for United than Tevez? Tevez­ is a much more important player and that's the­ reason the crowd loves him so much. If Ferguson­ pretends that 30 million for a world class player like­ Tevez is too much money when he has payed the same­ amount to bring in Berbatov, then he's clearly­ disrespecting Tevez. 30 million is a bargain for Tevez,­ he's worth more than that!   12. first of all, technically carlos tevez is a slave...­ its horrible to say that but he is a slave... and in my­ opinion all he does si to put pressure on gill and­ fergie by provoking the fans and this is a diry game­ you can't do that...     Do you think tevez is worth three or thirty­ million? Ferguson is not some scraping careless buyer­ like your clubs. The whole point here is that tevez has­ played his part and that part was, be on loan for two­ years.
    We also have players on loan and they­ shouldn't think they'll be signed there. Which­ player in the history of football has won five trophies­ and almost winning some more two?
    Our players on loan­ will be back soon, I mean Manucho and Campbel and­ they've the experience and trust of the­ manager.
    Who does this guy holding tevez playing rights­ think he is? In the era of the credit crunch,­ there's no club that can give a single person­ thirty million. May be get three million. Football­ money should revolve around football clubs and not­ within MSI pockets. The loan deal is over and­ that's where the strong story stops.
